I used to use Google Keep.
In my recent move to Apple System, my wife and I moved to Apple Notes for our shopping list and other stuff.

Google Keep, used to have a feature in lists when you start typing in a list item, that is already in the list, for example, I type Bread, it's on the list, so Google Keep would autosuggest item already there.

Is there a similar feature in Apple Notes, I looked but could not find it, it is great for catching duplicates.

There is no such feature in Apple Notes. If that feature is necessary for you, you will need to look to a third party shopping list app.

Google Keep is pretty much a universal app these days. I use it on my Windows machine and on my iPhone with the Keep iOS app. So you don’t need to necessarily stop using it.

Trying to de-google myself, but failing hard.

We use a shared Reminders list for grocery. The same issue exists but I can "Show Completed" and just uncheck what we need again.
