What would trigger the default tone? I’m not sure what it is. The “Sounds & Haptics” part of settings allows me to set text tone, new voicemail, new mail, sent mail, calendar alerts, and reminder alerts.

Usually third party apps with no personalised sound, like Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat…

The headline of this article is very misleading imho. There is simply NO way of changing it back. See here: https://9to5mac.com/2023/09/19/ios-17-iphone-app-notification-sound/
In Settings -> Sounds, you can choose your own ringtone, text tone, and alert sounds for voicemail and system apps like mail and calendar alerts. But these options do not influence the sounds of alerts from third-party apps. As of iOS 17.0, the Settings app simply offers no controls to change the sounds that third-party apps make.

Third-party apps that use their own custom sounds for push notifications will continue to do so. But many apps, including social media apps like Twitter and Facebook, do not include a custom sound and rely on the system default. For those apps, iPhone users will now hear ‘Rebound’ — whether they like it or not.

Since updating my iPhone 14 pro max to iOS 17 and again to 17.0.1 I don’t seem to be getting any sound or vibration for any notifications. Apps include WhatsApp, Messenger and plenty of others.

Had anyone else experienced this?

I'm not getting them in the native "Messages", not sure about others. I've tried everything I can think of, still no luck. Very not good, I've been late replying to time-sensitive stuff already. Disappointed something this fundamental is broken.

Did you guys check the Sounds & haptics settings to make sure these are not empty or somehow mangled?

Yeah I’ve checked the sounds and haptics menu. Everything seems to be in order. I am getting notification sounds and vibrations from iMessages and emails. Just nothing from WhatsApp or Facebook messenger. So I guess it’s an issue with those apps maybe

I've had this issue for ages with various apps {messenger, bank apps etc.}

The volume of the text/notification tones is super quiet for me too.

And the keyboard clicks are still doing that thing where they start soft and get louder.
Oh my god, me too ! And sometimes (regardless of the version of iOS), even when I'm not in silent mode, the little sounds (like when I press and hold a notification or a logo on the home screen) disappear. But the volume is activated, and I'm not even on silent. And sometimes it comes back, do you too ?

Seems to be pretty widespread. I have most notifications disabled and use notification center so I haven’t really been affected but I think it’s likely this will be corrected in another update. Hell, they may even use that little hot fix system they seemed so excited about.

Don't forget that Face ID will lower the volume of alerts while you are looking at the screen. If that's the only time they seem quiet then it's working as intended.

Oh wow, I didn't knew. How to disable that ?
Here is where to find it. Although it does a few other things too so might be better to leave it on.
