This seems highly unlikely. Why would Apple start manufacturing computers for which they have no software? It doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm obviously not an expert, but I'd reckon that Apple develops the hardware and software concurrently.

The quad core iMacs have almost undoubtedly been in production for around a month now and I'd be seriously surprised if they're shipping with anything other than 10.6.1.

Well we'll see. They did wait to ship the Magic Mouse without the iMac until they had a software update.

Also, I do think they have drivers made. More like they are holding until they are sure there are no driver issues that may impact performance.

Once again, I have to disagree. It just makes no sense for Apple to spend a boatload of money on manufacturing for device that has no software. I'd guess the Magic Mouse software update was released when the hardware started to become available for purchase. Why release it before the product is actually available?

Like I said, Apple almost definitely does it's testing before their products go into production. It doesn't make sense to do manufacturing and testing concurrently.

I think you missed my point. The Magic Mouse was not released the same day that the iMacs were released and shipped with it. They waited and released the mouse and a software update later.

Also, I'm sure they have been developing the hardware and software concurrently. Apple has likely had test machines for a while now. Just because they finished developing and testing the C2D machines doesn't mean they have finished with every aspect of the i5/i7 machines. As mentioned earlier it could be due to limited availability of hardware, but this would need to be something different than the current 27" models. Since other devices are being made with the hardware from different companies, I doubt this. It's not that unlikely that there is a bug with some drivers or the OS that they want to get hammered out in an update so they don't release a machine that works sluggishly like the current 27" which will probably need a patch soon.

I mentioned this in an earlier post. I ordered my i5 by telephone on October 23. The salesperson told me the delay in shipping is caused by the ATI HD 4850. He seemed quite sure on this point. Whether this is true or not is anyone's guess.

I think it is the 4850 that is causing the problem. If you configure the lower 27inch with a 4850, the shipping date changes from 3-5 days to November. So lets hope its a supply issue and when it gets worked out the 4850 will migrate over to the 21.5 as a cto (I know its a massive pipe dream).

This is probably the most convincing evidence yet. Nice catch.
