Phablets will likely replace tablets altogether just like smartphones pretty much replaced iPods, portable media player, watch, P&S cameras, calculator, gaming handhelds, e-book readers, etc.

There is a reason Apple discontinued the iPod classic which was their most popular line back in the first half of the 2000's. Old technology simply get replaced by newer ones out of more convenience.

Since owning an iPhone 6 Plus, has anyone had the urge going back to their iPad mini? Tablets are just an added accessory than necessity to me like having an iPod touch while owning an iPhone. The iPads will go start becoming extinct like the iPods before it. Smartphones (phablets included) will always be here though. They simply just do more and calling/texting feature is simply too important in case of emergencies.

The Asus Fonepad craze with 7-inch screens has already started here in Asia.

This is the beginning of the end for android users who always make fun of how small iPhone screens are. Now they got nothing to say really. Haha
Maybe but you could still say Android fans can laugh at the fact apple Haven't added enough features to take advantage of that large screen.

I wouldn't but I'm sure some would

Are you serious?? Even the basic apps as we know it will soon be optimized for those iPhones, with the biggest Android device running the exact same stuff as a Galaxy Y!

My wife has had a taste of a larger iPhone since Friday and doesn't like the jump up in size at all. Her hands are tiny and she wear jeans that look like they are spray painted on so a bigger phone is more of a hassle to use and carry around. I'm happy with the slight jump but couldn't justify a phablet because there would be situations where I just wouldn't be able to take it out. I don't deny though that using a bigger screen is better, I love the iPad, its just the portability factor that gets in the way for me personally. :)

She get the plus then? Is it just too long do you think?

I personally if I was to buy any apple product right now it would be the ipad mini.

No she bought the standard iPhone 6, but it is quite a bit wider and longer than her old 5. I can see her point as she can't use it one handed any more and this was common as she usually has a baby on the other arm lol. She does like the bigger screen element though and has said she'll get used to it.

I've had a go with the Plus this morning again and its a stunning device, just a little too big for me. It is longer than you think. I've always said I don't like phablet phones for the portability factor and the Plus has just reinforced that for me, but this is just based on my personal demands.

I think they will be good for our sales staff though as it will eradicate the need for iPads here. We give them iPhones and iPads and I can see this cutting the costs dramatically. A good move by Apple overall I think, just not for me. :)

Going to check out the plus today or tomorrow. Will see how it is for me size wise compared to my note.

They should be optimised already. Android has a myriad of phone sizes to optimise apps for and does an impressive job. Apple on the other hand only has 4 screen sizes to work with, yet things were not ready at launch.

Oh god... Why...

You run the exact same app as the Galaxy Y. With the iPhone, apps are being updated differently:

This is just an example.

Android doesn't even have a decent amount of tablet optimized apps. Impressive job my ass, stop lying. Also, remember that the iOS Dev community is actually interested and iOS and its users, so you can count for optimizations to new iPhones and iOS 8 to start invading the App Store, since they actually have the decent tools for the job.

The simple fact that you even suggested that both situations were the same says a lot about your intentions, here.

I wasn't talking about tablets. I was talking about phones. I'm sure that they will eventually get updated for the new screen sizes, however I think considering the fact that android developers have a wider range of Phone screens to cater to they do a good job. iOS developers only have 4 screen sizes. Some of my iOS apps are still not optimised for the 4 inch screen, two years on.

You really hate samsung & android, don't you?

It will take many months for ios developers to optimize their 1 million apps for 6+. Having decent tools is not the only factor. There's also time factor, money, etc. Only big devs such as evernote who can optimize their apps quickly because they have the resources for it.

Regarding android apps, yes it's true that many of them are not optimize for tablets. It may bothers you and some others, but there are millions people who use android tablet. If most of them are not satisfied with tablet apps, they will simply move to other platform.. The fact that there are million people are using android tablets shows that app optimization for tablet does not bother them enough to move to ipad.

The simple fact that you exaggerated a minor factor for most people really shows your intentions.

^^ Android has had that landscape view in email as an option for years. LOL at landscape view options being a "shining example" for Apple. Just goes to show that yet another Apple feature is common place for others. In fact a large number of iOS updates while new to iPhone users, are common place for Android users and have been for a while.

New for iOS but old-hat for many others:

Install another keyboard
See what's using your battery
Search the Web from Spotlight
Send voice messages
Use Siri like Shazam
NFC Payments
Hide photos
Edit the Today page
Respond to notifications
Change photo exposure
Paste GIFs into Notes

Android doesn't even have a decent amount of tablet optimized apps.

translated the other way, there aren't a ton of apps that have been limited to not be great on a larger phablet size phone. Again, my apps on the Note 3 work great and don't have to be "optimized"

I can't wait for Apple to finally introduce multitasking and call it innovation. Maybe they should go to third world countries and introduce the iToilet and innovate a whole new way for millions of people to pee.

Until then, I'll enjoy watching training videos for work on my while taking notes simultaneously on the same device in a second window using an actual stylus/pen if I choose to making great use of my time in airports.

Of course they are interested...iOS has a big captive audience that now is allowing them to slice off another piece of steak. It's job security. Never mind, it's taken them 7yrs and four releases by the competition to get there.

Stop making out that only devs for iOS care about their users. All companies are after creating raving fans. At the end of it, iOS devs like the job security and little by little incremental updates that keep them employed and making money.

I haven't encountered too much of a problem with app optimisation just yet. A few of the apps I use look ever so slightly blurred because there is an element of it being zoomed in for the bigger screen, but I expect these to be updated shortly.

I would imagine it is down to app developers making the adjustments rather than Apple? I doubt they would go to the expense of doing this especially if Apple had not released what was only rumoured until a few days ago.

I use and enjoy using Android. I have a Samsung phone, and that's one of the reasons that make me despise Samsung, besides other things.

Everything else you said is a lie, So I won't bother with you.

It seems that you might be wrong, people ALWAYS have something to say, this is a discussion forum after all. The following post pretty much says what I would have said about your quote:

Who cares what people say, but what you like and be happy. Otherwise you may have insecurity issues. With that kind of mentality I would have never enjoyed my 1520 and Windows Phone. In my opinion, Apple has got nothing on the Note 4. After looking at the Plus in person, it's just a bigger iPhone. That's it. The Note 4 is just so much more of a productivity device. The one that all other phablets are judged by. I have yet to see one in person, but basing it off the Note 3, I think it's fair to make such a statement. Multi window, SPen, floating apps, and a killer 2K AMOLED screen are just a few things that show how far behind Apple is with the Plus in comparison. But I give Apple credit for entering the bigger screen space. Now if they can only minimize the space around their displays.

Also to add on that they allow multiple user accounts on the Android OS now and the ability to photograph script or text on a board, and incorporate it as a note, switching the script to handwriting, that is pretty cool imo. The ability to easily highlight and copy text without shoving your fingers all over the screen is a great improvement also. I am looking forward to this!

Oh the fanboyism is strong with this one!

That was just cute!

I don't think tablets will go away too soon unless they equalize the cost between cellular and wifi devices, add on to that the additional data price that carriers want you to shell out for already insanely high phone plan costs. I will likely have the tablet and phablet combo for a while I think.

I for one would love to see phones become large enough that people are unable to use them one handed, then people who are still stupid enough to drive and text etc would be physically unable. Despite the few intelligent people who realize the full impact of texting etc while driving know the risks to others and respect it, there are always those self entitled a**hats who think the world revolves around them.
Either that or darwinism would cull them out as they crash their vehicles within the first few weeks... one can only hope  Then after they have all been culled out, one handed devices could make a comeback.

*embarrased* sorry for the rant, couldn't help myself....

It really depends on the person. For me personally, and many others, I would rather have a 4" phone and a 7" tablet than a 6" phablet.

Agreed , cept probably 4.7"-5" phone 9-10" tablet for me

See, my problem is I want one of each. :p

Right now, until I repurpose or sell items, I have 4", 4.7", 5.5", 7.9", 8.3", and 9.7". Likely going to sell 2 and handoff one to a family member--just deciding which ones is the hard part.

I personally don't think tablets will go away any time soon either. I know plenty of people with iPads that have no use for a mobile contract and I don't think networks are suddenly going to sell phablets with super cheap monthly tariffs. These are devices that overlap and have two potential markets. you also have to consider that phablets sized phones are an acquired taste for some people and not entirely practical for everyday use. I think we presently have all bases covered.

5.7" phablet and 12" tablet for me!! What's nice about this is I can leave the tablet home 99% of the time, which really frees me up in mobility.

I used to be always pining for an iPad, though I never got around to setting cash aside for one. Now that I've got my first MBP though, it seems that most of my iPad urge has vanished. At home I just use the very nimble MBP for everything I thought I'd use the iPad for. And when out and about my Note 2 is all I need.

Ironically, I've just realised that I actually now NEED to get an iPad, for reading and showing others musical scores when playing abroad. But aside from that, really an MBP + phablet is all I need.

The phablet is just such an amazingly useful format.
