I would also say they probably will not do this.

The first reason, as basically everyone else here has stated, is that Face ID is likely going to be the new standard for Apple products going forward. The iPhone X was the first generation Apple product with the feature, but more products likely will adopt it going forward, and I believe Apple will continue to refine/improve the hardware and software around it.

Another, more practical reason, IMO, is that with all the technology in and surrounding the screen functions as they are now, would adding another layer of functionality even be doable? The biggest one that stands out to me is 3D Touch, which already demands sensors under the glass screen. If Apple were to try to implement some version of Touch ID beneath the screen, I can only imagine it would be a challenge, to say the least, to do so on top of the 3D Touch hardware in a way that's seamless and integrates both functions. It's like why try and do that when they have Face ID? And I don't see Apple moving away from 3D Touch anytime soon, given that its functionality is baked into so many core iOS functions.

TouchID seems like a far better option for when you need to unlock your phone discretely, which is fairly often for me. With a recently purchased 8 Plus, I’m all set for the next couple of years at least, but I guess I’ll have no choice but to lose this functionality on my next iPhone.

I don't thinks so either unless Samsung uses it and it becomes a big hit and is efficient and reliable, Apple will then after a two to three year delay come out with their version of it and declare that it is something they research and how great it is and Apple fanatics will go crazy for it!

Apple likes to do their own thing "Think different" (which isn't always the best thing to do) so while Android OEM's go for fingerprint scanner Apple sticks to Face ID until something new comes, Nose ID? We'll see...

No. I don’t see Apple utilizing Touch ID under the display. They will refine and continually improve Face ID. They made that very clear that Face ID is their future, and the iPhone is just the start of what’s to come, aside from the iPad likely be next.

I thought apple is moving away from face id. I suspect Apple will consider dumping face id.

Furthermore, it’s not like Apple didn’t consider a fingerprint reader under the display, because they did experiment with that according to Craig Federighi. But more importantly, Face ID was always Apples goal and it was never the fingerprint reader to be their primary source. The fingerprint reader was Plan B, where as Face ID was plan A. So I believe Apple me that definitively clear that they don’t care for the fingerprint technology under the display and moved away from that option.

The technical hurdles down both paths were probably weighed about the same from the beginning - but added benefits and preexisting investments into machine learning and AR probably helped tilt the scale. In the end, Face ID has lined up very well with their other goals in iPhone so it makes since for them to go that route when it became a feasible possibility.

Plus it seems Apple has been pursuing passive authentication for their devices for awhile now - it's rather nice imo.

fingerprint scanner under the display isn't really something thats going to kick off due to supply issues and getting it to be quick enough.

samsung i think from sounds will be scrapping it for face ID level security.
