Fun fact, microsoft virtual pc used ppc's little endian mode for x86 emulation. Microsoft needed to modify virtual pc to work on the g5 since it can't use little endian mode like the previous ppc cpu's could.
Huh, that makes sense but I never even realized that. Maybe that's why VPC 7 runs just as terrible on G5s as it does on G4s?
I don't know too much about the ps3's cpu, and by extension the 360's
The 360 has more in common with a G5 than it does a PS3 cell. It's essentially a custom triple-core G5, whereas the PS3 is its own beast.

The GameCube would be a cool system to speculate on, though. It's a PPC 750 but with Altavec, which has always confused me a bit because most reports say the only difference between the 7400 and 750 was one has Altavec, the other doesn't.

I think later processors in the GC-Wii line, like the Wii U, had vector extensions. Not necessarily AltiVec, but still SIMD.

Also, multi-core on the Wii U is a bit hacked together because the G3 doesn't have the best support for SMP (similar to the 603, which the BeOS developers and engineers somehow got it working).

Okay it's been awhile since I read up on the GC's Gekko. It isn't Altivec (that came from hearsay of people referring to it on forums). But it does have SIMD. It just isn't Altavec. Here's a decent page about the GC's CPU. Apparently, IBM did put Altavec on the 360 and PS3 cell though.
