What does it matter? Must one upgrade to High Sierra? What feature of it can one not live without?

It's not just a high sierra issue. It's a Sierra issue too because that thread also reveals that web drivers do not support Pascal (nor probably Maxwell). That's exactly why people see UI glitches because it's not fully running all the UI layers and such correctly.

Best to stay with AMD.

I run Maxwell and Sierra. No glitches.

What a bummer....

Thanks for the info.

So let's stay on 10.12.6 in the foreseeable future.

It was mentioned this morning over at Netkas.

If true it would be a freakin' disaster.

I wouldn't be too concerned about that thread. It's based on one conversation with a Help Desk. I know about Help Desks as I worked in the industry. Almost NO companies have their own Help Desks, small ones maybe yes but big companies no. They contract it out to one company who then sub-contracts it out to another company who then hires temps from somewhere like Kelly Services. The guy on the phone is making $10.00 to $12.00 dollars an hour (No Benefits) and is far, far removed from the company he is supporting. He has NO inside information.

I love this one. Do you know who answers the phone when you call Apple Support? It may come as a shock but it's not an Apple Employee. Apple contracts IBM for their Help Desk. IBM answers the phone. (How Ironic Eh?) I know for a fact because I worked there. The Apple Support "Help Desk" is answered by a person (Kelly Services employee) who is working out of the old IBM plant in Boulder Colorado. The really funny part of this IMO is the fact that all the Help Desk personnel sitting in this huge IBM facility have brand new iMacs on their desks. Hundreds and hundreds of them. Saw it with my own eyes or I probably wouldn't have believed it either.

Sounds like the reason why when I called about my Thunderbolt Display they didn't know what I was talking about and asked how they could help with my iPhone........

Oh and also that thread was from back in June, High sierra has only been in beta, not yet officially released. It will soon.

Nvidia does not release drivers for any Beta version of Mac OS, saying there won't be a driver release back in june is accurate as Nvidia wouldn't release one until the official release anyway.

The issues described in that thread were people hacking the existing drivers to work in high sierra. Which is something it was never meant to do.

The high sierra official release is not far away. Lets just wait and see.

Reading that thread it looks like people over there never got the memo that Nvidia does not release web drivers for beta.

No wonder they feel like they are waiting a long time. They are hacking the Sierra web driver to work in high Sierra.

This is why I never apply to be a beta tester for software

Their confusion is somewhat understandable, as every other major OS for the past few years has gotten beta web drivers for the Developer Preview (and Public Beta) builds of the OS. NVIDIA just stopped doing that in the last ~12 months.

what about gtx680 metal2 support in hs 10.13 is apples driver capable or is it using metal1-compatibilty mode ?

because when its using metal1 ,nvidia developers might not get the api-information and resources to develop anything.
Apple might block them from eGPU, and release mac pro 2018 with support for amd-only for me absolut nightmare because all render software works with
CUDA much better then open-cl, and MAYA metal2 release is not to expect,
even autodesk promised it.
metal disaster happened with adobe mercury-metal-engine, it was buggy and slower then cuda.
now open-cl engine exist nor metal or cude and it slower ...

Yeah, he posted the same thing here, but on July 26.

So, we'll wait and see. (I wish the Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB would hurry up and fall out of favor with the miners so the price would drop back down to the MSRP.)

Hey,

I just upgraded to High Sierra. I pulled the GTX 1070 from my Windows PC and put it in my cMP to see if it works since Nvidia also released web driver for it.

On the desktop and editing FCPX, I don't see a tangible difference between the GTX 1070 and the RX 460. This is while editing.

I also checked to see if it supports Metal 2 and I can't confirm it.

Says that the GPU does support OSX_GPUFamily1 v2 feature set. So, I looked it up. And, it seems that it doesn't support all features under Metal 2 covered by OSX_GPUFamily1 v3, as shown on Apple's PDF doc about Metal 2 support below:

I KNEW IT, we nvidia users are fu---. again, not by nvidia.
apple blocks nvidia I PRESUME.
it is going to be very bad for high sierra to become the 1st choice OS in DCC
DIGITAL CONTENT CREATION NEEDS VULCAN or at least
working metal2 on any hardware in eGPU.

I still ask , is there anyone who can compare build-in and web-driver
with 680mac edition on mac pro 5.1 with high sierra?

[doublepost=1506609592][/doublepost]maybe in spring 2018, we can be surpised with official 10.13.3 eGPU metal2 OSX_GPUFamily1 v3 support from nvidia

I can, but I have Zotac reference GTX 680 flashed EVGA Mac ROM, not the real EVGA for Mac, if that's ok with you.

Just tell me what you need me to test.
Don't know how relevant it will be since web drivers call different kexts for Kepler, Maxwell and Pascal cards.

Also, I would like to repeat, it's very unprofessional for computer manufacturer not to give options for deferent GPU brands... Especially considering that many strong CUDA apps began their existence with Apple's OS.

I'm a little out of the loop here. What software takes advantage of metal 2 and Vulkan? I only ask as I honestly don't know. I imagine final cut maybe would being its apples own software.

Do any Macs support Metal 2 yet? My MacBook Pro 9,1 with GT 650M says "feature set OSX_GPUFamily1 v2" for both the Nvidia GPU and the Intel HD 4000 with the native MacOS driver. Someone on the Apple developer forum posted that their 2017 iMac 18,3 with the Radeon Pro 570 also lists "feature set OSX_GPUFamily1 v2" under High Sierra 17A365.

Perhaps, I am making much to do about nadaho....

Perhaps, OSX_GPUFamily1 v3 is like DX12. It's there and available, just not activated, yet.

Like, it's only just been 10.13.0... and 10.13.1 and future updates might change that for those GPU's that support it.
