I think Metal 2 will be activated this spring with external GPU support, because that's one of the features of Metal 2. Maybe that will also enable HEVC H.265 support for the GPU because Apple says, "Metal 2 includes features that empower the GPU to take control over key aspects of the graphics and compute pipelines. Essential tasks, such as the assigning of resources to shaders, can now be efficiently driven by the GPU instead of waiting on the CPU."

When Metal was introduced, el Capitan I think, it was immediately clear this was intended for MacBook, iMac users with i7 cpu's which have built in graphics.
For the GPU's we use in cMP this is totally useless!

And now we have Metal 2.

Hopefully Apple will improve OpenGL for gaming. It's dreadfully bad. I know gaming in MacOS was never optimal, but it was never as large as a 40%+ difference. It used to be just a few FPS. Actually, some games, at one time, performed better in MacOS than in Windows (WoW, Starcraft II, etc).

I've read somewhere that a user with an RX 580 did not notice any difference in FPS from Sierra to High Sierra. That sucks.

Nowadays, MacOS has more games than ever. The amount of Mac-compatible Steam games is pretty darn impressive, and there's lots of AA and AAA titles that are Mac supported. But without Apple putting any effort into OpenGL performance in the past 8 years makes it a pretty crappy proposition.

I don't mind on losing a couple FPS when it allows me not to have to restart into Windows. But when I'm litterly cutting my FPS in half, or when replacing a 7950 with an RX580 produces the same performance in MacOS, I tend to think something is wrong.

I am not sure if OpenGL is the right platform for games since we have Metal 2 and Vulkan right now.

Of course, Metal 2 is Apple-centric, which could mean good and bad for Mac users. Good in that iOS uses it. Bad, in that a game built for iOS might not be the game we want for a desktop Mac OS.

But, it does sort of make you optimistic that gaming on a Mac in the future will be cool and awesome, if the right great games comes out for it.

All it takes is a couple of great games for one to fork over their paycheck (pachecks) to either buy a console or build a PC.

For me, I built a PC... for what game? BF3!!!

And, all I wanted was 64 plyrs and a better experience than what PS3 version offered me at the time!

In terms of the Mac game landscape, I hope developing games for it will be easier for the regular Joe. Easy and fun. I don't know. I feel like that's the door of entry for Macs in game land since PC Windows already has the regular door filled....

Like, you have a Macbook and you invest on an eGPU enclosure and a GPU and you can suddenly become a game developer, sort of easy and fun.

I don't know.
