pastrychef—that is exactly what I did this morning. DLed a clean copy of ML10.85, put it on a new SSD, pulled the 8800, installed the Asus GTX 670, booted (no boot args changes and no nVidia web drivers) from the ML SSD with no other boot disks in the Mac and..... nada, nothing at all on any video out port. But no continuous reboot cycle either. I've given up unless anyone knows the cause and easy fix. My guess is something missing from an info.plist somewhere in the drivers. I'll never buy ASUS for sure. Odd how others have reported no problems with exact same card over the past few years.

Yes, MVC told me much the same when I asked if they could flash this card to efi. It felt like marketing up-sell, but they are a business, so no harm no foul.

If I remember correctly, MVC mentioned that (some) GTX 670 causes trouble, that's why he's not offering them in his shop, avoiding ASUS cards anyway.

Is there something about the Asus GTX 670 2G (screenshot below) that is very different from other GTX 670 cards of other makers and that prevents it displaying video on any Video out port?

Looking in the logs, I see this for when I was trying to get this GTX 670 working. Do they give a clue as to what is wrong? To an amateur it looks like a web driver problem.
