Here is what I am thinking. Standard cell phone for 29.00 a month. to make whatever calls I need. Keep iPad on me pretty much wherever I go like my laptop and I then have all the apps.

Im just trying to figure out now how many places I go with the iPhone and surf the net that I might not want to take the iPad. Like for instance when I am at the movie theater and waiting for a movie it start I normally pull out my iPhone and pt, or if I go out to dinner or the bar and am waiting for friends and whatnot I'll normally surf around. Well would I bring an iPad into those situations? what about on the toilet? Do I really want to be holding an iPad? hmmmm.

Bottom line is I pay about 100.00 a month on my iPhone. If I got a standard phone and only paid 29.00 and then got the 30.00 unlimited 3G from AT&T for the iPhone I could save some money and still have all the same functionality.

Then again the new iPhone is coming out in June with the OS4.0 and the forward facing camera and all the other bells and whistles...

This is a tough one. Anyone else thinking about this? I mean I'm sure everyone else has at least thought about it already.

What do ya say macrumor peeps?

P.S. Friday cannot come fast enough.

The iPad is too big to take and use everywhere.

Like if you're at a bus stop and just want to check when the next bus is coming, it's much more convenient to take out the phone. Or if you're standing in line at a fast food place and want to see if you have any new emails, it's more convenient to just take out your phone than to bring an iPad.

I thought about it for the same reason you are - cost. Then I realized that there are many times when I simply do not want to carry my iPad around with me while my phone is always in my pocket. Then I thought about it some more and realized that I would only be saving the $30 from the data plan since we have a family plan to cover my iPhone and my son's. I would still have to carry the minutes, texting and data, so the savings would not matter.

It would work in your case, but not if anyone has a family plan.

Personally, I'd keep my iPhone even if I had the iPad. I love the portability of the iPhone.

Yeah I totally understand. I am just struggling with the fact that I can have the same exact thing for less money. What I mean to say is if my iPad can do everything my iPhone can do with the exception of making calls then why not save a bit of money every month and just buy a cheapo cell for 29.00. ITs funny. 29.00 + 30.00 = 59.00/month. If I keep my iPhone nd add to that my iPad's 30.00 3G connectivity I am up to 130+. That is about a +/- 70.00 difference per month to be able to do the same thing.

Do I have the money to pay 130.00/month? sure.
Should I waste money where i don't need to? not sure.

That is why this is an interesting question. I'm sure others must be asking themselves.

I bet apple already thought of this, so the iphone will have some killer features besides the portability. One example is the front facing camera. Will be awesome to have, and you will have it anywhere.

Re: $29 I think the OP is making a comparison - if he drops the iPhone and picks up a dumbphone simply to make calls = cheaper plans.

I intend on having both. I am awaiting the launch of iPad in India. And I will sell my 3GS and buy an iPad. But eventually I will save up and purchase the new iPhone.
I can't do without Apple's iPhone (iPad, iPod Touch, iPad) software, being with me all the time, which is where the iPhone comes handy.
However, I really have fallen in love with the experience of using an iPad, from what screencasts and screenshots I have seen. The UI on the iPad is extremely attractive.
Between the two, I would keep the iPad, till I can save up for the new iPhone.

My area has Pocket Wireless. $30 for unlimited voice/data/text. Sure other areas have their own version if not Pocket themselves.

I guess I like to be free to be and unencumbered. To have to carry -- and keep up with -- a "big" iPad around with me everywhere I go would be a huge PITA.

If you are doing anything with an iPad at a bar/restaurant you are going to look like big giant douche. Now if that's the look you are going for, OK, but it's not really the look these days.

Sold the iPhone 3GS the day that the "iPhone HD" was leaked.

Dropped the obligatory data plan and went to a simple flip phone. Serious withdrawals.

Ordered the iPad+3G. Will use the 3G feature at $30 a month until the next iPhone comes out.

Of course, none of this would be an issue if AT&T stopped being such a dickwad and gave us tethering, or if AT&T didn't mandate that the iPhone 3G/3GS has to have a data plan, even if you bought the device outright or from a third-party.

I'm not about to pay $60 for data on two devices.

Brah, I'm too old to give two ***** what anyone else thinks I look like. That comes with age, though. I still remember back when I cared. Now I get out of my mercedes and I don't even notice the girls that glance. I could care less what someone at another table thinks about me pulling out an iPad to check directions.

With that said, as much as your second sentance missed its target entirely your first sentance made a lot sence and that is exactly what I am struggling with. Money is money man. save +700.00 a year is the next gen iPad next year ;)

I'm in exactly the same situation. One big question remains: where is that mysterious 29-dollar plan for standard phones that OP is talking about???

Best to avoid dropping the iPhone for risk of breakage

I'm keeping my IPhone even though I'll be getting the 3g. I won't be taking the iPad every place that I need web access. My IPhone is also my current IPod.

However unlike previous updates, I have no desire to update the the upcoming model.

Like hell I'd drop it. In fact can't wait for July to upgrade my 3gs. Love the idea of a flash. I use it all the time at work, photos being just one important aspect. Photos in poor lighting are usually dissapointing and one of my only gripes with the 3gs

I suppose a voice plan with no text is around that price. I'm on a family plan, so my flip phone is $10 a month, when it used to be $45 with an iPhone 3G data plan and 200 texts.

Of course, the other option is dropping AT&T for the cell phones and go with T-Mobile for even a cheaper family plan or individual plan with data. Sure, I'll lose 3G on it, but I'll be okay with my iPad+3G that still has AT&T holding our cohones.

Unfortunately, I upgraded to 3.1.3 on my 3GS, and when I had it replaced at Apple before selling it, it was preloaded with 3.1.3. No jailbreak solution there yet. I'm not really the jailbreak type, as I don't like "unofficial" and secondary releases to the real thing. But, that MyWi app does look awfully tempting.

Most areas have one. Here is one in Texas :

plan.

A lot of areas have one. I just called a local place and its actually 34.99 here not 29.99. So I was off by 5 dollars. Family plans are even cheaper per person!

I am surprised people are caught up on this. Even if you went with 40.00 a month unlimited you would still save money. Really not all that mysterious.
