I entertained the thought for awhile, but figured that I'd go through the withdrawals as well. There's always the "workaround" (using the iPhone with another carrier) but that also places limitations on it as well.
Apple knows EXACTLY what they're doing--because in addition to me kicking around the idea of doing away with my phone--I also did a complete 180 when I heard the new features for the upcoming model. Truth be told, I'll be leaving my ipad at home a lot more than I would my iPhone--so I'll simply keep 'em both.

No. I am keeping my iPad and iPhone 3gs. I cannot upgrade to iPhone 4.0 until summer of 2011. I will download os4 if that's an option when it comes out.

Brah, I'm too old to give two ***** what anyone else thinks I look like. That comes with age, though. I still remember back when I cared. Now I get out of my mercedes and I don't even notice the girls that glance. I could care less what someone at another table thinks about me pulling out an iPad to check directions.

With that said, as much as your second sentance missed its target entirely your first sentance made a lot sence and that is exactly what I am struggling with. Money is money man. save +700.00 a year is the next gen iPad next year ;)

WOW - if you're too old to care about what people think about you, I think you're too old to say "brah". Reminds me of the fist pumping champs off Jersey Shore. And correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're driving a Mercedes, it seems like you should be able to afford an extra $70 a month for the functionality/portability of the iPhone. If you're trying to cut back on your spending, I think you should look else where besides your cell phone.

I love saving money--and have dropped lots of things over the past couple of years to save a few dollars--but not my iPhone. One of the things I dropped was my home phone so my iPhone wouldn't cost all that much more.

Unless the Mercedes you are driving is an SLR I doubt that impresses the girls, and if it does and you are not taking advantage of that then . A man not interested in woman's glance is a dead man. Of course if you are that pinched for $700 then why are you driving an SLR.

Look it's not about what random strangers might think of you using an iPad in a bar/restaurant it's what your significant others think. Frankly if a friend or family member was using an iPad like that I'd organize an intervention pronto. You are in a social place being unsociable. Just do what guys do at a bar: drink, watch the game, start up a conversation with someone by bitching and moaning about the botched play. Pretend you have money or valor on the line.

I thought there is a 29-dollar plan on AT&T. At least, that's impression I got from reading the original post. Why would I go to another carrier and have to pay ETF for leaving AT&T too soon just to have a $29 plan on some other carrier? Makes no sense.

I just want tiered data plans...Now with my iPad and overdrive that I am trying out I just don't use my iPhone data as much. I could easily live off of 100mb a month on my iPhone since I only really use it for Twitter and email now (plus with unlimited 4g I use it even less.)

I'm also thinking about it. My family plan carries me as the only one with an iPhone, an extra $30.00. My iPad might not need 3g while I am in my hometown, I know I'll use 3g while traveling.

As a woman I almost always carry a purse, slip the iPad in that extra pocket, no big deal. A cheap cell + iPad might work. My 2g will still work as an MP3 while exercising. Still thinking though, I had my heart set on a new one in the next few months.

I'm thinking about dropping the iPhone if there is not a reasonable phone as a hotspot solution. Waiting to see what happens when the next hardware comes out. Either AT&T will provide, iPhone will be on carriers that do, or I'll be looking hard at the Sprint/Evo.
I'm questioning paying AT&T $100 bucks without a feature I want when I can pay Sprint less $ and get it.
It's not even about the phone, it's all about the plan.

Brah is old school hippy talk. Years on lot at Dead and Phish shows'll do that to ya.

Secondly, yes let me correct you. It has nothing to do with what one can afford but more about setting priorities on what one chooses to afford. How is it exactly that you think people get rich, by spending money on useless items? then again by your response I would bet that you would call the term frugal millionaire an oxymoron.

I switched to CREDO Mobile last month. Bought me out of my ATT contract. ;)

2009 SL550. and Again, this has nothing to do with being pinched for money.

Well Then I am glad you aren't in my family. I mean imagine all the silly things I must do, like looking at an iPad in public, that would cause you to organize an intervention. Wow.

Either that OR I could do whatever I want to do and not care what people like YOU think. Yeah, I think I'll do that

And why should it make sense for you? We are talking about me here. How in the world could I have any idea whatsoever the state of everyone else's plans.

Personally, I'd keep my iPhone even if I had the iPad. I love the portability of the iPhone.

Agreed!! I love my ipad and in fact, there were times were I neglected the iPhone because of the new guy. But iPhone is always king. I would never give that up.

Since I have had my ipad I've lost interest innupgrading my iPhone to te next one. Thinking might ski p this year and keep my 3GS

Most areas have one. Here is one in Texas :

plan.

A lot of areas have one. I just called a local place and its actually 34.99 here not 29.99. So I was off by 5 dollars. Family plans are even cheaper per person!

I am surprised people are caught up on this. Even if you went with 40.00 a month unlimited you would still save money. Really not all that mysterious.

We have a $35 unlimited carrier out here. No contract, unlimited everything. Why non smartphone users stick to the big companies is a mystery to me. If I wasn't concerned about data then most metro areas have a clec that charges way less.

I have heard that they may offer $50 unlimited smatphones pretty soon. At which point the cheap ass and the fanboy inside of me are going to fight it out.

As for my iPad replacing my iPhone. No way. You will be "that guy" every time you break out you iPad to check for directions or kill time in line. The beauty of smart phones is that you can inconspicuously goof off in public. If you just put on a serious face then people think your checking work emails while your really just playing plats vs zombies.

Not to mention how much of a liability it will be carrying the iPad everywhere you go. You could get mugged, you could easily drop it, maybe lose it or get it stolen out of your car while your in the store.

Now here is the big one. If you carry it everywhere then you will have no choice...

You will have to get a murse. A backpack is to big, a messenger bag is to uncomfortable. No choice but to carry a man bag.

And that's not right.

Only Japanese guys and the guy from the hangover can pull off murses.

And even then...

Drop the iPhone. I have an iPod touch and cell phone right now (Verizon works a lot better than AT&T where I am and I have access to WiFi in most places) and I'm happy with the combo and have no desire for an iPhone. You will have (almost) everything you need with the cheaper cell phone and the iPad. The only thing I think you would be missing would be a music player for working out (if you listen to music while working out) but you could always just get a shuffle.

Thinking of skipping this years iPhone release if the iPad is going to be upgraded every year like the iPhone I'd rather invest in the next iPad version...

I can almost use the iPad everywhere I would the iPhone, standing in line? yep! sitting in the car? yep! waiting at a restaurant? yep!

I probably won't sell my iphone because its the only phone interface that doesn't make me want to shoot myself when using it. However, I may cancel the data plan and just use it as a phone, or in wifi areas. OS 4 has a "disable Cellular data" option, which would be perfect.

I'll have to see how things go after the first month on the iPad 3G.

When my 3G arrives I think I will feel exactly the same way except for keeping the phone part. For me its not the price of the AT&T iPhone monthly bill that bothers me, it is feeling like I am not getting my moneys worth for the mandatory data plan. With tethering that will be delayed until people forget and an "unlimited" 5G of data it makes one want to find other alternatives.

With a 3G iPad, bluetooth headset, OS4 in the fall with background voip apps it will be the solution I am waiting for. I only hope the voip apps will have some kind of bluetooth voice dialing, doubtful but who knows. This solution is not for all but for me it is worth not being in a contract and not getting the full value out of something like the data plan.
