O2 Simplicity Tariff with Iphone

Voicemail notification

I read somewhere else that if you use Simplicity and therefore don't get VisualVoicemail then you also don't get any notification when you get a voice message. I.e. you don't even get a text message.

Am planning on moving back onto Simplicity in a couple of months once my contract expires so wanted to know if this is the case or not as it sounds unlikley to me.

Anyone know if you get a text notification of voicemail on the iPhone?

well for what it is worth (and i would be interested to hear from anyone currently using the Simplicity Sim) i phoned O2 and was told by a helpful O2 rep (they do exisit seemingly) that you should get a text.

That's just what the MAN wants you to think. You definitely get texts AND phonecalls from voicemail. The £15 difference between the Simplicity and the iPhone tariffs pays for the subsidy and little else. Perks such as visual voicemail, no fair usage policy and the wifi bolt-on are not worth nearly doubling the price of your tariff for. There is no sense in staying on the iPhone tariff at the end of your contract. I suspect if you phoned o2 retentions and threatened to leave, you'd probably be able to get the simplicity tariff half price anyways. once you've paid off the subsidy, they should treat you like any other o2 customer.

SO does this mean simplicity is not as good as PAY GO for internet?
I dont understand these terms and conditions.
I just dont want a LESSER internet plan, in case it causes issues with my use.
 
Hello. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is the difference between wi-fi, web bolt on and 3g?

I know that wifi is used for surfing the net on my laptop, but why would I need this on a phone if I have 3g already? Is surfing via my phone better with wifi than 3g?

And is web bolt on for 3g? Or would I be able to use the iPhone without this bold on?

The reason I'm asking is because I am thinking of getting a Simplicity sim and PAYG iPhone instead of starting a new contract. I'm willing to lose the visual voicemail, but don't want it to affect internet/apps speeds as this is the main reason I'm getting an iphone.

i dont or wont really be downloading much via iphone ..... but i think download limit also refers to just accessing the internet, eg visiting websites. So even though you are not actively downloading files manually, by just being on a website is eating up the MB limit...........true?

some of you seem to be in disagreement.
Im gonna go to 02 store to ask them.

yes you dont need wi fi if you are using 3g for internet.
But at home wi fi is faster......
also wi fi may be faster in wi fi hot spots....

you dont have to put bolt on.....but then you wont have internet with 3g connection.
you need web bolt on.....if you wanna go on net anywhere.......

simplicty is way to go.....
internet speed is not an issue......
only some people say mb download limit is less on simplicity.....read the thread....or ask 02.....im gonna ask them myslef this week......

What wifi hot spots? I assume I'd need an account to log on in these hot spots? At home I'd just use my laptop anyway, so only concerned about surfing while out and about.

I never trust these customer service people as I get told different things! Would rather see something in writing...

hot spots, alot are free in city centres.
Some you need a password for, which may charge i think.
But iphone allows using BT and cloud or summat hotspots, if you activate with original sim that comes with phone.

At home, use wi fi also.... it will be faster ...test it out....
Outside = use 3G....
If you stumble on a wi fi spot.... use it, but no biggie......

yes dont trust customer services, diff people tell you dif things.
Sometimes you have to just give up, buy the product or use it, to see how it really is.....

I have Simplicity, and can confirm that I get text messages on my iPhone notifying me of a voicemail almost immediately.

I have the unlimited web bolt on too (which means I can use their 3G network or Edge -- depends where I am, 3G isn't available everywhere), but when I'm at home or somewhere where I have accessed their wifi network before, my iPhone switches to wifi (remembers the password). Wifi is much faster. But I don't need to do anything, it switches to wifi automatically if available.

Just checked my usage, 8.7MB in 20 days. So that 200MB is not going to be a problem. I did ask them when I signed up for this plan last March, they said "unlimited" means "unlimited".

There is no 200mb limit. The simplicity data add-on is unlimited, subject to fair use policy.
 
sorry maybe I am being stupid but what is a tariff in terms of this discussion. Is a tariff an additional import tax you pay because the phone is an "american" product? Or is the tariff relating somehow to subsidized contract pricing?

Thats great that you can check your net usage...... how did you do that?
8.7mb of just browsing or actualy downloading?
were you on web for a healthy amount of time?

I have a quick question to add, as I am considering this Simplicity Sim too.

Everyone refers to a 200MB download limit.

With the new 3GS capable of taking video footage and uploading direct to YouTube, is there an upload limit?

Or does the 200MB refer to upload & download of data?

Also, anyone know how much in minutes a 3GS can record (I forgot to check this on my review model)?

And how much MB per minute the file size is?

molala, thanks for confirming the notifications. Please can I ask if you use VOIP or audio streaming which is listed in Jazzatola's quoted extract above? I would like to use these if i switched to Simplicity.

You can check your usage (voice calls, SMS, web) on the o2 website by logging into your account.

I'm usually on a wifi network, which keeps my usage down. But when I'm on the train or elsewhere, it's useful to have 3G or Edge access to check email and news, search for places to go and directions, download some apps. Nothing major.

so using wi fi doesnt count to the internet data usage policy?

Hi Rob. No, I don't do VOIP (I use the skype app when I'm on the wifi network; and if I have to make international calls from my iPhone there is Megacalls) or audio streaming. Just regular browsing, email checking and occasional app downloading.

About the 200MB limit, I only saw it on this thread. As I said, I asked O2 last March, and I was assured it's really unlimited (others here have posted this too). But for my use, it would be a challenge to get to 200MB anyway!
 
If, for example, I am watching youtube videos for a full hour using 3G, roughly how many MG would that use up?

iPhone is actually quite clever, you get lower quality video on 3G/Edge (a lot more pixelated, so less size to stream). Just turned off Wifi to see the same Youtube video on 3G (actually Edge, just can't get 3G at my flat for some reason tonight) and noticed this. So I'm not sure you'll have the patience to watch youtube for a full hour on 3G. And if you do, it won't use up as much MBs as you would on your computer or on Wifi.
