Maps??

xMotion GPS (not the Drive version) - $0.99 on iTunes - let's you download maps to memory. The size of the coverage area and the zoom detail determine the kb's needed. It can then be used with an external GPS antenna or manually. I've got it on an iPod 2nd Gen. Works like a charm.........

How are you using this on an iPod? After looking at their web site it is only offered for the iPhone and iPad.

mourning mapopolis

Mapopolis was a navigation app that worked just fine 6 years ago on my Palm. I never tried it linked with a bluetooth GPS, not a problem since I usually know where I am starting. Turn by turn navigation just like Garmin or TomTom.

So where is an app like this for the iTouch/iPhone? Sigh....

I did find US road atlas which might be worthwhile, released 4/10/11.

This Galileo http://www.galileo-app.com/ is an aid to downloading and caching, which if fine if you know where you are going ahead of time! Interesting, they incorporate various map formats including this one I'd not heard of before, OpenStreetMap -- sounds like wikipedia for map freaks!

It could be that offmaps2 is ok, but they have some bad reviews.

Keep looking, friends!

best, Ted

btw, I really love it!
I have an iPod Touch which means when I'm on the road I can't view maps unless they're stored on the ipod. The native map application is useless in this situation. Galileo fills this need nicely!

with FREE version when you are connected to the internet, you can find the area you're interested in, and scroll/zoom around. As you do so, the maps you are viewing are loaded from the internet and stored (cached) on the ipod. Later on when you're not connected, you can still use the maps that you viewed earlier. Any other areas are not yet on your ipod so you obviously can't view them.
And it works really really fast - verified.

The extra in-app purchase ~1.99$ "import offline maps from computer" is just a convenience. Instead of having to scroll/zoom around on the iPod to collect maps (tiles), you can just draw an area on the map on the computer, select the zoom levels you want and save them to an Atlas on your computer.
You can then import that to your ipod and select it as a source for the display. (how to - http://galileo-app.com/blog/import-offline-maps-guide.html)

Oh, it seems this comment is so loong :)

Another feature I adore is track logging. I could turn on/off logging of my movements, with export of tracks in some standard format (KML, GPX, etc).

How about going to mapquest or another mapping website and taking screenshots? You would have to do a bit more research to find places of interest, but this should at least take care of the need for maps.

App of offline maps

There is such an app, it is called "You Need a Map", the picture for the app is the infamous Pointing Uncle Sam off the Military posters.

It takes up 2G of space on your ipod touch, just FYI.

So how would you a. load TIFF file from OSX Desktop into iPT?
b. Display TIFF file?

I'm trying to do this with an extensive topo DRG map collection (newbie).
