OK, so that is your opinion, but you have no right to judge the OP based on what values you hold for your own personal consumerism. I am very happy that you have decided to wait like a reasonable human being, but guess what, some Canadians are in a financial situation that they are able to spend the extra money to make the trip down, make a nice weekend away of it, and relish in the experience of having the iPad now and being one of the first in Canada to have it. I have had mine for a week now and it has been a ton of fun showing it off and enjoying it long before launch date. Nobody NEEDS the iPad, so you could argue that anybody who buys it is impulsive and merely blowing their money. Heck, I could judge you for getting a 3G and giving more money to the cell phone companies that already have many of us by the balls. Can’t you just get a wifi and use it at home?? I mean, come on, are you that dependant on the internet that you need to pay a monthly charge to have it with you always??? What is a 5 hour drive versus indefinite monthly payments??

My point is, so you decided to wait….you don’t see anybody judging you for that do you?? Oh wait...I just did.

Wow !!!
Don't be so defensive.
As far as the Canadian dollars value against the US dollar, expect it to keep going up. So if you wait you will probably be able to get more for your money.

If you feel that you need to have bragging rights about being the first then that is your prerogative. Personally, I don't seen the rational of people waiting in line overnight in front of stores to be the first to purchase something.

A few months from now when all of the hype dies down will it really matter who got their iPad first or ten thousandth in Canada?

Do you really need an iPad that bad that you can't wait until they have them where you live? I mean a 5 hour trip to by a consumer gadget seems a little bit overboard to me. I am looking to get a 64GB + 3G when they are available here on the 24th, but I won't be waiting for the store to open in the AM to get it. Instead I probably won't buy one for a week or so after they come out. Life does have other priorities.

Take a breath

Thanks for the advice, Nash. But I do know about life priorities and don't really need to be lectured about them by you. Take a moment to click on my website in my signature and you'll realize that I have a lot of perspective in my life.

Happy to wait, but also happy to take a road trip with my family.

Seems like my weekend in the US will be off the rails anyway. Called Syracuse - they got a shipment today and it is already sold out. Called Buffalo, they are sold out but have a shipment in the back waiting to be unloaded - he wouldn't tell me if it had Ipads on it or not.

The girl at the Syracuse store told me to click on the "Notify Me" button on the apple site for their store and it will email me when an Ipad is avail. for me. However, went online and can't find it. Must be the instore website only.

Any Buffalo-ian's or folks from Syracuse want to instore reserve it for me using my Apple user ID? Anyone already going that can help out? Final call before I have the long 6 week wait!:(

The Best Buy at Carousel Mall in Syracuse, where the Apple store is located, does not stock IPads. Not sure about the BB in Dewitt (eastern suburb).

They may be currently out of stock, but they do stock them. Just wanted to clarify in case anyone thought they never carry them.

I drove from Ottawa on the 7th and bought it from there. The night before I called to ask about stock and a very helpful employee put one aside for me.

I also had them activate it on purchase, then I surfed to the following link: http://www.theipadguide.com/content/ipad-dead-pixel-test-how/7171269 to check for dead/stuck pixels. Found two on the first ipad. Had them bring me another one. Checked again and it was fine. This was a deal breaker for me driving 3 hours, one way, and I made it clear to the person on the phone.

I paid $499 for a 16 GB plus 8% sales tax. Then 13% PST/GST at the border on $499. Canadian dollar was slightly below par that day. I paid $605 Cdn total (from credit card statement) and $40 in gas before departing.

On another note. The Syracuse Apple store is tiny compared to the Ottawa one and I found them under-staffed and less helpful and knowledgeable also. Not sure I'd derive anything from that observation, but that's what I noticed.

Good luck.

Can you get to the Apple store on 5th avenue, Manhatten? They got loads of all size iPad's but no reservations.

Hmmm...didn't think about Rochester.
Will call them. Think my family and I will stay overnight in Kingston and travel together to the US tomorrow - Syracuse, Rochester are both drivable.

Thanks again for the help (and understanding by some) on this forum.

I'm reading Alice with my kids each night - just a page or two. I'm determined to read it from the Ipad this weekend! :)

How about this, I will stop being defensive if you check your attitude and stop judging people.

Fantastic news!! Typing from my iPad now. I'll send details in the morning. Tired now, but the story is interesting. :)

Thanks for everyone's help.

Sweet. Glad to hear. Might want to consider staying a few days to take advantage of the $400 per person exemption.

BB in Dewitt (Eastern Suburbs of Syracuse) DOES indeed stock Apple products including the iPad. Just make sure you call ahead!

iPad available in rochester

I have a 16gb that I was considering putting on ebay. I love it but might want to upgrade to 3G after all.

It's a registered development machine, which means it could get the 4.0 O.S. loaded on it, when available to developers.

Hey I love my iPad. I feel bad for my iPhone though it's not getting love it's used to hahaha. I got the 32 gig also hate the snow we had today

Ok...here goes.

I went to Syracuse without my family and arrived as soon as the store opened up. While my two boys played outside the store with my wife, I talked with the salesperson about the ipad. I asked if he was getting a new shipment in today and he told me that they weren't and that the didn't get deliveries on Saturdays.

I told him that I was told on Friday night that they DO indeed get deliveries on Saturday and that I had just driven from 5 hours away based on that info. He then said for me to wait a second and disappeared behind the magical silver doors. When he came back, he told me that they WERE getting a delivery and that I should wait with the kids until noon. Essentially, he was telling me that if i waited, I'd get my iPad.

So we walked around the mall for a bit, took the kids into the games room and then sat down for a lunch. At noon, i went into the store and it was CRAZY busy (almost no room to move). I couldn't find my other sales person so i asked a new person about the ipads and if mine arrived. He told me that they weren't getting any (always the same story) and then I told him that the previous person alluded that i should wait. Then HE disappeared into the back, returned, asked me what i ordered, and then said he just needed to talk to the manager.

We waited a while for the manager. In the meantime, the original salesperson came back and a told us both that nothing came in and i was out of luck (and sorry). :(

I asked if he was sure...he said yes.

Disappointed, i went back to the restaurant to finish our family meal and make the long trip home. Of course, I filled my wife in on what took place and that i truly felt they had ipads in the back and that they jut weren't feeling like giving me on.

Smartly, my wife told me to go back and tell that to the manager...i had niching to lose by letting them know how unimpressed I was about the entire process.

So i went back, told the manager, and also told him at it really seemed to me that were ipads back there for me but i felt the other guys just didn't want to give them to me. I was very calm during this part. The manager told me to wait, disappeared into the back, and reappeared with two 32 gig ipads for me. True magic, i guess!!

Anyhow, i now have two ipads here and i love them! Had a great time playing with with it last night, and the kids had a ball messing around with Alice and The Cat in the Hat before bed.

Was a worthwhile trip!! Thanks again for all the positive support and great comments from most of you.

Best,
A.

I dont understand why did the employee's lie and what did the manager have to say about it

I would guess that the ipads he sold you were reserved for someone else. The iPad shipment did come in, but all were spoken for, which explained why the salesmen checked but came back saying none were available.

At the end, it all came down to who was yelling and screaming the loundest. You are really lucky that the manager did you a favor, and perhaps let you jumped the cue. In retrospect, this may be exactly why the Apple store salesmen are acting so unweloming to out of town callers asking about their ipad stocks. Even though they have stock, they'd probably not tell just to avoid the "You told me... and I drove down x hours all the way from..."

Anyway I am happy for you... but others thinking about doing the road trip should think twice.

Your wife is the reason you have those 2 iPad's as you know. She is one smart cookie! Have fun with your iPad's. :)

She sure is!

As far as yelling and screaming the loudest, I was calm the entire time. Kindness always wins out.

The manager didn't seem to care about the other two saying they were all gone. This seems like something that has been taking place for some time. And I don't think they were reserved for customers, they were most likely kept aside for friends and family of the employees. Just my opinion after seeing them interact with me and each other.

Wow. Must have been disappointed when you thought you would be going home empty handed. Glad to hear it all worked out tho. Enjoy the new iPads.

Actually, I know plenty of people who go on long driving trips just for the fun of it - at least he has an excuse to go. I like watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on the Food Network. Am I going overboard for driving several hours with friends to go get something to eat, when I could eat at a similar place? Am I going overboard for going to a ballgame many hours away with friends?

Life has the priorities that we put on it. You can judge others all you want, but you have to realize they may not share the same "life views" that you do.

mcfadyen, I'm glad you got your iPads and are enjoying them. I will try to stick up for SOME people who have worked in retail stockrooms. I worked at a bookstore, and it's impossible for everyone to know when shipments come in and what is on them. Often people were being told that we were out of a stock of books because there were none on shelf and none in the system. Well, sometimes we had the book, it just hadn't been logged into the system because the pallets were still being "broken down" for entry at that time. My hope is that there was just miscommunication about what they had in stock; however, that doesn't excuse someone going back to check, "Hey Ed, by chance, have we gotten any iPads in shipment?" I know they're real busy, but it did earn us a lot of repeat business when we were able to come up with the book they needed. I know I frequent stores that I have "good experiences" with, and I'm guessing you do too.
