Had slow typing frustrations on earlier betas. But problem was, for me, resolved in office 2016 final versions and no such problem now. Sorry it does not help, but seems not to be a universal problem.

I have the same problem, but it only happen to files that open in the "compatibility mode" (can be seen on the top bar, next to the file name). Then simply I convert the document (file > convert document), and the problem disappear.

This works for me. Thanks!

I have this problem on a persistent basis... to the point I even bought a new MBP hoping it was just my machine running slow (yeah yeah... any excuse).

I've clean installed MSOffice, I've taken up the compatibility mode>convert file solution and uninstalled Magnet... but alas, still getting persistent laggy typing in Word; even on very small documents! It's ridiculous...

I have the same problem and none of the solutions seem to help. I have a new MBP with full specs and since the last update (14 dec) Word is again very slow.

What I did notice is that Word 2016 is normal when it is not connected to the internet. But yeah.. disconnect from the internet just so that you can edit a larger Word document..

Here is another observation that may help to get the picture clearer: I have used Office 2016 (Word, Excel) since it came out on the most basic 11" MBA 2013 running El Capitan without ever experiencing any typing lag. Yesterday I bought a brand new MB Pro 13" 2016 and now I have a huge, unworkable typing lag.

Draft mode does help (but I don't always want that, esp. with track changes).

Both of these helped a bit for me.
Thanks. Unfortunately what you say is literally true: both help "a bit"... Still very weird to me that I didn't have this problem on my old and (on paper) much slower MacBook Air. Just frustrating that what I do most works suboptimal on my brand new computer. Let's hope for an update!

Unfortunately none of these solutions are working for me. Have a brand new touchbar MBP, got Word because I need it for work, but the typing is painfully slow on my large documents. Unfortunately I'm an author and freelance editor so large documents on Word are kind of what I do.

Really frustrating to have to use my old computer in order to get work done when the whole point of paying for Office 365 was so I could work on the go. -_-

[doublepost=1484225387][/doublepost]I have just received an update which seems to have cured the problem!

I've installed the latest updates and tested on a fairly large document, 58 pages with track changes enabled, footnotes and headers and everything seems fine. Absolutely no lag.
I was using a 2016 rMB M3.

I upgraded to Office 2016 and I have to say Word is super slow when it comes to typing. Like it lags behind each word when I type. And, its worse when I type in a table. It's driving me crazy. Is anyone else experiencing this? It's the same for me on my Macbook Pro or Mac Mini. And, the slow typing on a table is also there on Word 2016 for iPad.

I searched everywhere and I did not find a solution! however, I investigated the component of the Micro$oft word and figured out that its most stalling component is 'Grammar Check'. So, if you disable this option, then you would see a considerable improvement in its speed even though that still there would be a little lag behind continuous erasing process!

To disable the grammar check:
simply open Word-> Preferences -> disable Auto Correct and
then go back and get the "spelling and Grammar" and uncheck every box under "Grammar".

Hope it works

I have Office 2016 on an iMac and a MacBook with no problems now. I found the problems were apps running in background consuming CPU capacity and too many apps open consuming Memory. I expanded my iMac's memory and closed the CPU consuming apps (which tended to be those very frequently checking something). All works fine now.

I had this issue too. The only thing that fixed it was closing Chrome. Once I shut Chrome down Word worked perfectly...

Mine is the same and it's very annoying - all my work is report writing and it's a nuisance....I type too fast for word / powerpoint and it's just annoying the life out of me. I thought it was maybe just the beta version but got a new Macbook and got Office for Mac 2016 and it's still the same.

In addition to this .. I have a problem where I'm typing in a table in Powerpoint and come to the end of the line - naturally powerpoint should just continue my sentence on the next line but it seems to be highlighting the whole cell text and then as I am typing faster, it is overriding the cell text .. I keep having to use undo and be careful when I come to the end of a line ... also same thing happens when I press enter for a new para in powerpoint ... highlights the whole cell text and overrides it ... again I have to use the undo and work around it ... I really hope this isn't it .. they better have updates to fix these few things.

I'd love to use iWork or Keynote but unfortunately we have standard templates for our reports at work and most people operate from a windows machine so I have to go with Microsoft Office for now.

FYI - I had this issue too, created a ton of messages to Apple, and then finally figured it out with a group of folks in a forum (we figured we'd just solve it ourselves). This issue is caused by Window Snapping features you may have installed (Better Touch Tool, Magnet, etc.). Removing those removed this issue for all of us.

I know this is a different issue, but I just want to vent about the last version of MS Word. I just found out that every time you try to use Word it has to connect to the authentication server or it won't work.

This morning a truck snapped the optical fiber cable that provides internet to the office and I was really mad that I couldn't work on some documents because I didn't have internet. It seems moronic to me. Luckily I kept a copy of MS word 2011 on my mac precisely for this kind of "emergency". It struggles to work on High sierra but on a pinch it would do.

Anyway, I just needed to vent. The internet company fixed the problem a few hours ago and I'm back online (obviously).

I work frequently without internet and open word 2016 without any trouble??

Same here, I use it all the time on airplanes and other places without internet. Never had any trouble launching Word, Excel, Outlook, or any other MS Office application without an active internet connection.

Yes, they do check periodically whether or not your license/subscription is still valid, but as far as I know this only happens once a month and can be pushed back several times if no internet connection is available. Eventually, the applications will stop working but this takes a loooong time...
