Also, what version of iTunes are you running? You may have to downgrade it to 8.2. but see how redsnow works out first.

Redsn0w just gets me to the point where its waiting for the iPhone to reboot, but it never does (automatically). Once I get tired of waiting and reboot it myself, it will load the ramdisk, then kernel, and finish the install - get to the point where it says "Done!". The phone stays in a powered-on state, but the screen is completely black. Ive gotten to this point before, it just stays there. I can reboot it, but then it goes right back to wanting to connect to iTunes.

Well these are the instructions I found from another site and they worked for the people who tried it:

THIS WILL NOT DOWNGRADE THE BASEBAND this is to go back to 3.0 and jailbreak if you desire.

This was done to an iphone 3G on AT&T so be aware.

1 / Uninstall iTunes 8.2 .
2 / Install iTunes 8.1.1
3 / Place your iPhone (under 3.1 or blocked restores) in DFU
4 / Make a left Shift + Click Restore and select your ipsw 3.0
5 / Once the restoration is completed you'll get an error 1015 (Do not worry this is normal)
6 / Do again a restore but this time not in DFU mode but in the rescue Mode ((Displaying the USB cable on the screen) After the error 1015 phone goes into rescue)
7 / Once this second restoration always an error 1015
8 / Close iTunes (8.1.11)
9 / Open Quickpwn 3.0 (unofficial)
10 / Quickpwn will tell you that you must reset your device, to do so, 15 seconds remain supported on Home + Power. Your phone turns off, release all, press 2 sec on power and now the iphone tell you that only one emergency call is allowed
11 / Now itunes will say that the iphone can only be used with version 8.2 of itunes.
12 / Uninstall 8.1.11 and install itunes 8.2
13 / Use Redsn0w for jailbreak your phone you're done

Alright... Ive scoured everywhere I can find so far... but I cant find a DL for either iTunes 8.1.1 or 8.2.. any help?

I did that... but still cant find a good DL link for 8.1.1

Ive heard some guys have done the downgrade from 3.1 successfully, so there has to be a way...

It sounds to me like you never properly got it into DFU mode. If you had, you could just have ignored the 1015 error and then hacktivated and jailbroke with redsn0w.

I'm gonna try and downgrade my own 3G iPhone just to see if I can do it like I said it can be done with Redsnow... I'll post back when I'm through.

If you get to this point you just unplug it for a few seconds like 5-10 and then plug it back in. That's what I had to do when I upgraded to 3.0.1

IMHO it's not worth all this trouble to just downgrade for a week or so until a 3.1 jailbreak is complete. You'll have to set up your phone all over again then anyways.

How do you know when the next JB ver is going to be released?

Per saurik on cydia's main page. It states that once you install 3.1 on your iPhone, you can't go back to 3.0 and may never be able to jailbreak again. They are working on it.

Mine ends the same way as the OPs. It gets to where Redsnow is installing Activation Bundles and during that, the swirling white circle thing comes on and it goes nowhere from there. I'm going back to 3.1, just thought I would test this.

I don't. Historically it doesn't take too long for it to be cracked. Aparently ChronicDev is pretty close to releasing GreenPois0n or something.

On a 3Gs < Important... S...

The 3G can be downgraded and jailbroken no matter what. Unlock is another issue if you upgrade your baseband.

Well... mission unsuccessful today. I really need my phone up & havent had it since 8a, so its been 8 hours now. Im gonna put it back to 3.1 and hope that a hack for 3.1 is released soon. In the mean time, if anyone gets it figured out, pls let me know! Thanks for the help today guys

Ok I got my downgrade to complete on my 3G iPhone. I had o go to my laptop running Vista to do it (I knew having multiple laptops running differant OS versions would pay off one day :) ).

1 Downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0 the way you were traying to do by selecting 3.0 or 3.01 in iTunes. Let it complete and you will get the 1015 error.

2. Find quickpawn 2.2 on the internet. I think I used search result #2. Ran it in Vista. I tried it in XP and it gave me an error and it couldn't run.

3. Follow the instructions in quickpawn and in 10 seconds you will have your iPhone working. It just needs to be activated by placing your sim in the phone and connecting to iTunes. Unlocking is no longer possible since the baseband was upgraded by 3.1. I think Redsnow was failing because it was trying to unlock the iPhone which is now impossible to do.

Any questions, let me know.

Sweet! I''ll have to try that tnite then... I have a HTPC that runs Vista Ultimate that I can use to try this. Just to be clear, I dont want to unlock my phone, just jailbreak. So connecting my phone to a Windows box won't format it for Windows tho, right? I want to sync it with my MBP, so that isnt really an option if thats the case.

Come to think of it, I have a Mac Mini running Leopard (I think 10.5.2 or .3 - something old, havent even fired it up in a while..) I wonder if that would work too??

thelatinist: I am positive I am in DFU mode, screen is completely blank

It won't matter what computer you restore it on.

I restored it on a Vista computer and then restored from a backup on my Mac. I jailbroke it on my Mac as well.

All this will do is jailbreak the iPhone and nothing more. Cydia will be installed and it will be just like using the phone before you upgraded to 3.1.

All along all we needed was something to kick the iPhone out of recovery and everything that I read that worked for other people didn't work and I felt bad yesterday. Finally I tried quickpawn and that worked first try!

You'll get yours working tonight, I promise, it's as easy as I mentioned in the post above. :)

Ok, I FINALLY got it! Had to do almost everything on my Vista box to get it to work. Its up and running on 3.0. Now... to find cool apps to download and cool stuff to play with on my "new" iPhone...:D
