Where its way too hot.
About the popping or cracking sound.

I absolutely love mine. Super fast, beautiful screen, surprisingly good speakers, awesome keyboard and generally silent except........

My only concern is a noise I hear occasionally for a split second, it sounds like a cracking or popping type sound. It happens very infrequently and seems to be when I first turn it on, after a few hours it seems to stop happening. My guess is that as the iMac heats up plastic parts on the interior expand, I am sure everything fits really tight inside there.

Does anyone else hear this noise coming from their iMac or know what this might be?

I have a White iMac (recently purchased a couple of months ago). It just started doing the very same thing as you described. But runs fine.

BTW I love my cd2 white 20" imac. I am giving it to my wife and will be getting the 20" 2.4 hopefully this week. Can't wait.:D

So what do you think it is? Besides that my iMac is flawless, it just bugs me every time I hear it.

Last night I reached around and pressed my fingers on the rear of the iMac case from the upper left to the upper right. When I pressed down I was able to reproduce the sound, though it didn't seem quite as loud. I tried this on the sides and lower parts of the rear but they did not cause the sound. I have to conclude that the heat is somehow affecting the rear plastic enclosure and producing this sound. When I hear it the sound does seem to come from the upper rear of the computer.

I wish someone would say their iMac does it too and its normal, I'm tired of worrying about it. Then again I do have Applecare so I am trying to ignore it but the perfectionist in me is making it difficult.

One more zero and I think you might have persuded me but I think maybe your wavering with your enthusiasm...:p

Doc prego.... I am hoping it is just the casing warming or expanding or something.

Thanks I believe you are right. In any case it works wonderfully in every way so I have decided to stop worrying about it.
