Old guy FPS

I'm an old guy (nearly 40), so I don't know what all you kids like with your your loud rock and roll music and "cool" skateboarding hippity-hop culture. Most things frighten and confuse me. I don't know the difference between Call to Honor and Medal of Warcraft. I do not know the first thing about gaming. That said . . .

What I do know is that I want to find a game for my mac that will let me blow some stuff up. Years and years ago, I played Medal of Honor on my eMac and I loved it. I liked how it looked, and I liked how I could move around in the environment instead of feeling like I was on a narrow path I had to follow. I liked the WW2 setting in Europe. I want to find something similar to that, but better. I played Call to Duty on my old xbox, but it was too limited in where you could move. I also played Knights of the Old Republic on my old xbox, but all that quest stuff got boring. Also, I don't have a lot of time to build characters and develop skills and all that stuff. I've got 3 kids, so I'll have to limit my blowing-things-up time to airplane trips or maybe half an hour a week -- I can't spend all that time unlocking new skills or any garbage like that.

So . . . what suggestions do you have for me? Preferences:

1. FPS or similar (third-person from a tank, etc)
2. Easy to get to action, little character-building
3. Europe WW2 preferred, but anything ok if the graphics are cool
4. Preference against sword-and-sorcery or martial arts stuff
5. Open-ended environment.

I'm running a MBP with 2.33GHz. Also, I'll probably wind up getting Leopard at some point soon if that makes a difference.

I've got a day-long flight to Asia coming up in a few weeks and I've seen all the movies the airline is offering. Any help is appreciated.

After ignoring most of the filler trash you put into that post I think you are asking for a game idea. Call of Duty 2 might be good for you or Battlefield 2142 I like both of them and you can "blow stuff up." Also at your little backstory your not even 40 your not old or even close to being old so no need to use that again.

Thanks for the game ideas. I wrote the filler only to explain that if you respond with any game that's too complicated or if you reference something every that gamer would know, I won't get it. I'll check out your suggestions -- thanks again.
 
You might want to see whether it'll run on intel macs first.

Mac:

No One Lives Forever is fairly open ended (if you search for intel items). It's great fun to listen to the baddie conversations when you sneak up on them. Try to find all the intel stuff to unlock some items.

The original Dues Ex doesn't put you on a pre-determined path, you have a few ways to go about the objectives, or you can just walk around trying to shoot all the baddies. I am pretty sure it's OS 9 and no OS X, so might need PC version and run in VMware, etc (it's really old game so might run ok in virtualization).

Postal 2 and the expansion is fairly open ended between the objectives. It's much better than most people expected, and not exactly a homicidal rampage.

These are fairly linear, but good.
- Black Hawk Down
- Ghost Recon
- Close Combat - first to fight
- Max Payne (short, challenging at times)
- Prey


PC: requires online access
Team Fortress 2. Quite fun, especially if you are good / on the winning team.
 
I'm nearly 40 and certainly don't consider myself too old - I also own pretty much every first person shooter sold on the PC since Wolfenstein 3d
 
i like the tom clancy games llike ghost recon and vegas. but these are on 360 not for mac as far as i can tell


i do reccomend halo. or halo 2 if you have vista installed via bootcamp

to the poster above: could you directly order from bungie though?

As for games? I've no idea! I don't play WW2 FPS games.

Yeah, especially "Call to Honor and Medal of Warcraft". LOL...

I am pretty sure it's intentional, as the OP mentioned the correct name of one of them.

unfortunately, the WW2 genre is currently drying up due to the excess of those types of games. call of duty (first one) was by far i think the best single player experience for a WW2 games. medal of honor: allied assault was my favorite (the storming the beach level did it for me) until i played the russian campaign in call of duty. call of duty 2 was good too, just not as stellar.

escape from castle wolfenstien isnt exactly the regular WW2 game, but def worth playing. there is even a free multiplayer with that game that you can download and works on PPC macs (its called escape from castle wolfenstein: enemy territory) but i must warn its hard to find a game as most servers have custom packs they want you to download.

if you are familiar with bootcamp, id boot up win xp or vista and try out day of defeat source, it runs on the Half life 2 engine, but it strictly a multiplayer game.

ok i kid i kid, halo 3 was fun. ill give it that. i just cannot like a console FPS being such a PC nerd.

one more thing, if you want character unlocks id recommend Call of Duty 4 and battlefield 2142. COD4 is easier to pick up b/c the levels are smaller and other FPS experiences you have will transfer over easily. BF 2142 is almost the only game you need. levels are massive like real battlefields, there are vehicles to use but the learning curve is steeper. you will find yourself being killed and have no idea where he bullet came from. but after you pick it up, its a blast. i played BF 2142 exclusively for 4 months before i bought another game. i was a big fan of BF 1942, but unfortunately you wont find many severs for that classic anymore. hope this helps
 
Thanks for catching the Unfrozen reference, Yellow. It might make you old, but it's good stuff.

It sounds like COD 2 or Battlefield 2142, or both, are what I should check out. I'm trying to avoid bootcamping b/c I don't want to have to buy Windows, but I'm not opposed to the idea completely. (I'd need to buy Windows, yes?) My biggest concerns are that it's cool, it's easy to learn and start/stop, and that I shouldn't worry about Leopard killing it when I upgrade later this year. Although someone noted that COD was slightly better than COD 2, I'd be worried that an older version would be glitchier with Leopard. Thoughts?
 
COD is better than COD2 in that the latter feels like an expansion pack than a sequel. i wouldnt worry about COD being glitchy, and certainly not more glitchy than COD2 as both games run off of the same quake 3 engine. COD2 came out in 2005 while the first one came out in 2003. both are before leopard and i really wouldnt worry about any compatibility issues.

if you want to run bootcamp you need to buy windows, which could make gaming on that platform too expensive to consider.
 
I recommend Halo, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and Call of Duty 2,3 or 4, depending on if you're on Bootcamp or not.

Battlefield 2142, however, is better with internet play, than not.

Call of Duty 2 uses a proprietary in-house engine. That's why it looks far better than Call of Duty. ;)
