Call of Duty 4 is the hot FPS game right now, but it will require XP or Vista via Boot Camp, if your machine has the chops to run it.

Uh...HELLO?! Marathon, people!

I can't believe I'm in a forum full of Mac users and the game, Marathon, hasn't even been mentioned!

http://source.bungie.org

Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal, and Marathon Infinity are CLASSICS on the Mac platform. The Aleph One group is also always producing new binaries for Mac OS X (Universal), Linux, Solaris, Windows (yak), and I'm sure other operating systems that I haven't thought of off the top my my head.

I'm close to 30 and while Halo is fun...Marathon is where it's at!
:D

escape from castle wolfenstien isnt exactly the regular WW2 game, but def worth playing.

It's called Return to Castle Wolfenstein and, as I repeatedly bleat on these boards, I love it! Really worth playing though it doesn't seem very happy running under Leopard for me :(

They were def awesome when they were released.... but I'm not sure the OP would find them great considering he is talking about games like Medal of Honor. Marathon was one of the best and I know graphics don't determine whether a game is good or not, but we're talking about a game now thats like almost 15 yrs old!

As a 30-something I'm not exactly "old", but I do understand being at a place in life where you just want to blow some **** up without having to invest hours and hours into detailed storylines or tutorials.

My solution? Star Wars Battlefront.
I set up the PC server in my basement with the Battlefront Server code and configured it so it's continuously hosting a game over my LAN with a minimum count of 1 player (me). It can be tweaked to my liking with respawn throttling, # of teammates, etc.. All I do is launch the client on my PC (not sure if there's a Mac version) and connect to the ever-present LAN game. Simple. Pointless. Frag-tastic.
The sequel looked a lot better, but I preferred the more simplistic gameplay of the original.

I know a few folks who use the Descent series as their "blow stuff up to let off steam" games. Not a bad choice, although perhaps a little complex.

Personally, I'm deeply impressed with Call of Duty 4. I'm not an FPS gamer, so that's an unusual admission coming from me*. I would recommend Halo, but my suspicion is that someone looking for the real world grit of a WW2 game would find it annoyingly scifi.

Not too far from 40 myself  and i still have a ppc mac so I'm not 100% on intel supported games. But i'd go for Halo, Quake 4, Doom3 or maybe a freeware game like Sauerbraten? I'd obviously say 100% go for BF1942 but I know this doesn't have great intel support :-( Shame. Tons of mods for this game too! Typical..

ps,
Halo or Quake 4 ! (sorry no WW2 unless it's CoD2!)

Definitely get Call of Duty 4 or Team Fortress 2 if you are planning to run Bootcamp. These 2 games requires almost no leveling (you only level up to unlock guns for COD4), and a lot of stuff blows up.

I won't recommend Battlefield 2142. The game demands a lot from your graphic card. I had to play the game on 1024x768 (which isn't really that bad, but I'm more of the eye candy person) and it was still lagging. Quite disappointing.

If you want to be mischievous, get Grand Theft Auto. You can take out your anger on anybody and anything in the game. Forget about questing, just pop the disc in and start beating everyone up (or run people over) just for the fun of it. I get a good laugh playing that game all the time. I don't recommend you to play this in front of your kids.

I've had nexiuz on my comp since before I bought any games. Although I havn't played it recently, its a pretty fun FPS (kinda like unreal tournament) which you can play against bots or online). I think it has no story, you just get thrown into a room to blast players apart. But its FREE!:D

If you're bootcampin', Crysis is quite a fun game.

Very intense FPS. You're fighting aganist the North Koreans, then later in the game aliens and the Koreans.

You can blow just about anything up, kill your emenies in all sorts of interesting ways, for instance, you can grab a barrel, and hurl it at your emenys head, knocking him out if not killing him. You can also for instance, shoot/blow down a tree, and if it lands, boom, thats one dead guy. :D

You can also take a surface-to-air missile launcher and blow their helicopters out of the sky. Tons of stuff can blow up.

If nothing else, check out the demo, and buy it if you enjoy it.

TS, what you're talking sounds almost exactly like Call of Duty. I've been playing it again lately and it rocks.

It has the blowing up, the WW2, and the feeling of freedom (altough really it's linear but very well scripted).

I'm an old guy (nearly 40), so I don't know what all you kids like with your your loud rock and roll music and "cool" skateboarding hippity-hop culture. Most things frighten and confuse me. I don't know the difference between Call to Honor and Medal of Warcraft. I do not know the first thing about gaming. That said . . .

What I do know is that I want to find a game for my mac that will let me blow some stuff up. Years and years ago, I played Medal of Honor on my eMac and I loved it. I liked how it looked, and I liked how I could move around in the environment instead of feeling like I was on a narrow path I had to follow. I liked the WW2 setting in Europe. I want to find something similar to that, but better. I played Call to Duty on my old xbox, but it was too limited in where you could move. I also played Knights of the Old Republic on my old xbox, but all that quest stuff got boring. Also, I don't have a lot of time to build characters and develop skills and all that stuff. I've got 3 kids, so I'll have to limit my blowing-things-up time to airplane trips or maybe half an hour a week -- I can't spend all that time unlocking new skills or any garbage like that.

So . . . what suggestions do you have for me? Preferences:

1. FPS or similar (third-person from a tank, etc)
2. Easy to get to action, little character-building
3. Europe WW2 preferred, but anything ok if the graphics are cool
4. Preference against sword-and-sorcery or martial arts stuff
5. Open-ended environment.

I'm running a MBP with 2.33GHz. Also, I'll probably wind up getting Leopard at some point soon if that makes a difference.

I've got a day-long flight to Asia coming up in a few weeks and I've seen all the movies the airline is offering. Any help is appreciated.

Battlefield 1942

Someone else posted this but I also would highly recommend it. Its a little dated, was released around 2004 for Mac, but is still being played. You will find online servers that fill up on most nights, but there is also great single play. It was one of the first games to have a WWII theme (my favorite) with the ability to use all vehicles, naval, ground, air as well as AA, mines, etc etc and it still plays very well. Admittedly the graphics are not as sharp as the newer series like Battlefield 2142, however, if you look at it like a watercolor as a lot of WWII pictures are, then you can become immersed in the game. I have played most FPS on the market and I've always played '42 on and off.

There is also a mod called Forgotten Hope which adds 60 maps, enhanced terrain, enhanced models and authentic theaters of war. The mod covers every region and major time line event of WWII. Its close to 4 GB so that should give an indication of the amount of enhanced visuals, etc.

I still play it online today and I'm 40. :p

I've been playing Enemy Territory fine for hours straight on Leopard. PPC though.

outlets for aggression(i'm kidding):
Battlefield series - stear clear from bf vietnam (bf1942 is set in WWII and is an oldie but goodie)
Call of Duty Series - Being a vcod(original cod) veteran i highly recommend this 1. It was created by some of the original Medal of Honor creators who branched off - all set in WWII except for cod 4
UT2004 - Rated M for Blood and plenty o' gore - blowing things up is a way of life in this game. no bootcamping required.

I don't know what that person was talking about with crysis. It is highly overrated although gorgeous (if you have the horsepower). UT2k4 is likely the best option suited towards you.

Just be aware that unless you can plug in your MBP you'll not get long playing on the plane. As for my recommendations - steer clear of multiplayers if you are planning on playing on the plane. BF1942 used to be my favorite multiplayer game - but the single player seems a bit weak..

Play BG42 or DCFX. Single player is far better compared to standard BF1942. There are others too that I rate, like Silent Heroes..

I love BF1942 :D

WW2 Online?

Nobody plays WW2 online? Granted I haven't subscribed in a couple of years but they've made great strides in helping people get into action sooner. NO character building but still a persistent online map that changes all the time. I'm picking up an iMac tomorrow(my first mac) and was planning on giving it a try again since the kids are older.

35 here btw, and feel far from old. Ok, maybe a day or two every now and then I feel it :D.

Didn't realize BF1942 was released for Mac. Might have to hunt that down if it works on intel macs. Great game, especially player controlled artillery. I missed that in BF2 and 2142.

If you can get Steam to run in OSX...or use bootcamp...

My vote is on Counterstrike 1.6 - the most timeless game, ever. Or I guess you can try Counterstrike Source for pretty pictures. By far I feel it has the highest degree of realism (except maybe the fact that if a grenade landed next to you, you'd probably die instead of running away with 10hp). I'd imagine when I'm 30 years or older, Counterstrike will probably be the only game I play. Fast action, no need to dedicate your life, endless fun destroying other players. Well, I guess if you don't have our aim down, you gotta devote a few hours to practicing.

Honestly, I really want to see if Microsoft and Apple could team up and create some kind of way to connect an Xbox 360's video-out signal to your Mac laptop (a dedicated solution, maybe?), but if they aren't, a good old fashioned no Intel IGP solution would work just as well. I really need to catch up on my gaming when and if the Mac Mini gets a really good dedicated graphics processor. I have not played Half Life Orange Box, or KOTOR, or Star Wars Battlefront, or KOTOR 2, or any of the "recent" games, like Guitar Hero 3, etc.

Another vote for Call of Duty 4. There is a Mac version coming out late August if you don't plan on boot-camping. Unreal Tournament 2004 is out now for mac too.

If you do plan on boot camping I'd suggest some Valve games like Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike Source, and of course Half Life 2. Also Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War.
