Whilst I agree that it's probably sensible to wait for the "dust to settle" - many people have confirmed that it works fine, so going ahead if you're confident you know what to do should be fine.
If you've got all the files, and an already jailbroken iPhone - the process should only take about 3 or 4 mins.
If you've got to do the jailbreak, then add another hour onto that.
So, one quick question, you don't need to have the phone activated in order to jailbreak it do you?

You don't need to do it with file copying and terminals. Simply add http://installer.iclarified.com to your installer sources and install the unlock program in the iClarified category. You don't even to change to Flight mode.
