But this has to be done for every iphone and iPad that shares the Apple ID, every time there's a new device , every time the device is restored, etc. Again, with family sharing nowadays there seems to be far less reasons to go with this approach.
New devices dont happen very often and i've only had to restore my iPhone 5 twice in the last 3 years. Potentially family sharing is the best way for a completely new addition but in my eyes its more hassle sorting all that on my other halves two phones and iPad than it is to just do this.

It sounds like they don't already have Apple ids so that would be a pain for you. But yeah family sharing really is the better way for someone starting a 'family' now.
