I've got an 8 which is my first haptic home button phone.

I have one criticism - even with the button click set to 3 (most pronounced), I absolutely cannot feel the vibration when the phone is sitting on the table and I just press the home button to wake it up to check for a notification. But when the phone is in my hand I feel it every time.

Anyone else? It's pretty annoying tbh.

2 and 3 feel the same way, which is still very light. Number 1 setting is very, very light. Perhaps Apple will do something about that in the future but don’t hold your breath now

Why do you need to feel it? The phone responds visually when you press the Home button.

A lot of people have been conditioned to the feeling but it's just a change in learned behavior.

I paid good money for this phone, and I want a good Feel. :)

i find that i probably push it way too hard as i keep waiting for that tactile response

im sure ill learn...

This is my first Haptic feedback button iPhone too, I have the same feeling.

I can hear it, but don't really feel it. The hear is also much less pronounced, and I have to set it on a surface that I know will vibrate more/produce more sound.

Also, 1 setting is very light, 2 is a good default, but 3 doesn't make it stronger, just seems to make it louder when using in hand. I wish there was a 4 setting for in hand use. Not quite as good as the physical button when it comes to feel.

7 Plus with no issues here. I was skeptical at first but it has me fully convinced. Turn the iPhone off then press the home button for a real trip.

All you're supposed to do is feel a "click". I certainly do. If no one told me it wasn't a button it would probably take me a while to notice that it wasn't.

I have to remind myself that it is not a button, too. Works so well and I can feel the “click” so well you would swear it was a mechanical button. It will be hard to give this up one day as I like the way the 8+ functions.

Agreed, home button is going to be sorely missed for many, when they do away with it on all future models.

I like it more than the standard button from older phones but never liked double clicking in general to bring up multi tasking; really looking forward to the new X gestures.

I just don't get it. When it was a true button, what did you feel? You felt a click. I think Apple has done a phenomenal job emulating that click sensation with a vibration. It's not supposed to feel like a full vibration.

It’s just how the Taptic Engine is designed. It’s meant to feel while in hand more so than just a violent vibration we used to get in older vibrate motors.

I Easily prefer the haptic home button over the standard push home button we had back with the iPhone 6s. I think it's quicker and more responsive and of course, it assists with water resistance.

What annoyed me the most about my 7 Plus was the audible CLICK that accompanied the Taptic feedback. Not really noticeable unless it was the middle of the night and your partner is laying next to you in bed, trying to sleep ... Gotta say, I love the X's gestures - totally silent. Finally!

Haptic home button is a necessary change. You know in the past, mechanical home button is the weakest link of iPhones and iPads. It used to break first (beside the silent switch, which is another moving parts).

Plus I love the virtual haptic feedback. Feels more subtle and modern compared to the clicky feels of the old one.

Hope the iPad getting the same improvement. That and also 3d Touch is a killer feature for me. Absolute brilliant!!

I still feel it while on the desk but feel it much more when holding in the hand. That is normal as it gets.

Not to mention the fact that the mechanical home buttons could, and did, wear out and break. There was even a series of the 5 that came from the factory with defective home buttons. I love the taptic feedback on my MacBook Pro and I love it on the iPhone 7 (and 8).
