I still feel it while on the desk but feel it much more when holding in the hand. That is normal as it gets.

I feel NOTHING....with a 3 setting, in my hand. I am hitting the dam home "space" MANY times to get the phone to either get out of the app I'm in or back to main menu. I am quite frustrated with my iphone 8 right now.

Why not take to the Apple store and have them take a look. Why get upset? They will assure you all is ok.

In the end I think you will find out that it is normal. Gone are the days where you phone goes skittering across the desk as the old vibrator was mean and loud. The haptic is smooth, precise and quiet. If you can feel it in your hand it is working.

Why do you need to feel it? The phone responds visually when you press the Home button.

A lot of people have been conditioned to the feeling but it's just a change in learned behavior.

A bit of instant feedback at the moment of tapping that's redundant to (and ideally, slightly ahead of or at the very moment of) the resulting/called action is very important for many, where any noticeable pause after the "press" or "click" and before the visual or audible notification of the resulting action can feel very un-reassuring if not downright aggravating. This gets reinforced in those instances when clicking/pressing results in no resulting action, maybe from a bad press or malfunctioning device, leaving one wondering while increasing one's doubt in the performance of their device the next time there's no immediate feedback but ever-so-slight pause between tap & then action.

That is one of my major criticisms of iOS7's replacing visually-obvious and large button shapes with small text-only tappable areas -- too often the entire fingertip covers the text and you have no idea if your action "took." And in those instances where the action didn't take but you waited 1-2 seconds before realizing it (and had no clue the text really wasn't pressed because you couldn't see the color change, and/or the "button" is so faint that it's useless), the aggravation starts to simmer and your phone no longer feels like "it just works" like it used to. And then you doubt things the next time you tap and do not feel or see any instant feedback that the tap "took."

The taptic home button, when set to 3, is not too bad. I've grown used to it. However, two observations:

1) it was much more noticeable (on the 3 setting) with my iPhone 7, even when in its case, and it's much less noticeable on my iPhone 8, in the same case. I assume possibly due to differences in damping out the vibration, from the glass back and different size/thicknesses relative to the same case. Which brings me to....

2) it's much more easily felt when holding the phone than when not holding it. Are you using a case? If so, try holding the phone and then pressing. I can feel it then. With my 8, I can hardly feel the taptic "tap" when the phone is on my desk, while I could really feel it with the 7 even when lying on the desk surface. But when I hold the 8 (in the case), I can feel it much more positively.
