midway through my 3rd term at college, my laptop died, and I HAD to get a new one, this was not optional. My parents said they would buy it as I had about $300 to my name at that point. I went to the Apple store with the intention of buying the Macbook. It was smaller, lighter, and the keyboard was IMO nicer. My dad took one look at the white Macbook and said No way was I getting that, it looks like a toy. We spent the extra $800 on the pro model.

Looking back, since it wasn't my money it was the right choice. It'll let me play games (Intel Integrated graphics will last for THIS generation of games before you start running into problems, the dedicated graphic cards will last at least for 2 generations, maybe three before they become too old), the screen is larger, but most importantly, at 3am when my room mate was going to bed, I could sit in bed typing my paper without any lights on and use the backlit keyboard.

Having only touched a MB a few times, I gotta say that the perks that the pro model have really make it worth the extra. And... when compared to a comparable Vista machine, the price isn't that much more.

Something that is often overlooked: how long to you want to run on battery?

I am on or around campuses all the time helping Comp Science researchers. Many of the CS folks have MBPs, and I have a MB. My MB has better battery life (of course, this depends heavily on what apps are running, screen brightness, etc.).

I said this is in the last MB vs MBP thread: even if the MBP was offered, I would not take it. For the longest battery life and mobility the MB is a great solution.

Don't get a MB, spend the extra money and get the MBP.

Better investment over the long run (2.5-3 years). Don't get Applecare until your 11th month.

Macbook is a toy. With a really nice processor. That said, there's more to a computer than just the processor.

Get more than 1 battery. We run 8 batteries. Expensive? Yes, but necessary on longer trips. We NEVER look for a plug. As batteries die over their lifetime, get at least 2 extra if you're a student. I would recommend starting there and getting more as you need them.

A computer is the most important investment you make in life if you use it correctly. Don't skimp on it.
