You did see that there were over 300 vulnerabilities in iOS reported and fewer than 20 on Android?

Like sparksd, I have been an Android user for several years and haven’t had a problem. “Some people” could be anyone. “Some people” could make disparaging comments about iOS.

I wouldn’t use an iPhone if you gave it to me. Obviously, lots of people don’t share my sentiments.

The most recent Android security scandal (like 1-2 months ago) found OEM's have falsely been claiming to be applying security patches. So the OS was reporting you were up-to patch level March 2018, but the vendor did not apply the actual patches to give you the expected protection.

I don't claim iOS is perfect. It certainly is being patched by Apple on a regular basis, but at least we know everyone can get and install those updates on day one. And Apple users can trust Apple is actually patching the issues they report to be fixing.

SRL provides a nice app - SnoopSnitch - that analyzes your device for missing patches. My Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy Tab S2 both show zero missing or "false" patches.

How has no one said WhatsApp, yet?

It's the one messenger everyone in my country uses, and the only form of social media I engage in, and it doesn't run on iPads. If I could use WhatsApp on my cellular iPad, I wouldn't even need to have my phone on me.

If there was one thing:
  • you wish your iPad Pro could do, but cannot
    -or-
  • that frustrates you with your iPad Pro
....I'd be interested to know what it is!

I'm contemplating a 10.5" as my main portable device, and coming from a MBP which could do everything, I'm worried there will be lost functionality. What is your main gripe?

If it could do home remodeling, or dishes, or dusting, or other household chores, that would be extremely useful right now.

Given that it doesn’t have any means of self propulsion, I’m guessing I’m still stuck doing it.

A laser would perhaps be useful. That’s a feature that could do a lot without adding mechanical mechanisms.

Unfortunately, at the moment, iOS is my least useful tool. But in those pauses, it does afford me the opportunity to catch up on the rumors.

Firstly WhatsApp is NOT a social media and secondly outside of some south Asian and Eastern European countries, WhatsApp is actually not that big.

Also the web version of WhatsApp would work on iPad. I just don’t understand why they don’t release a native iPad app when they finally did release a Mac app.

Mouse / Trackpad support (optional, similar to how apps can choose to support Apple Pencil).

Apps that can compile code (Xcode, Python, Java/Kotlin)

Bash Terminal support + ENV vars (I know there are bash terminals available already, but the ability to set environment variables is important for dev stuff, and it'd be nice to have an official solution from Apple)

This hasn't been mentioned yet, but I wish I could open up an app multiple times through split screen or in general.

And yes, mouse/trackpad support and file management are my top 2

I wish that Excel for iPad allowed you to copy/delete/create tabs.
You can do that already. Just tried it out after reading this post.

If you look through my post history, you’ll see in another thread we’ve discussed about this in detail. Start reading from post #40 onwards.

I hate my iPhone X

Three or four pages of that mind-numbing discussion was all I could stomach and I got no useful information about malware from it but thanks for trying.

Literally everyone in Germany uses it as well.

Ditto in Spain. I understand that people in the US texts a lot, meaning sending SMS or iMessages if you are using an iPhone. Well, in Spain “texting” = “using Whatsapp”. Nobody, and I mean, nobody sends SMS anymore.

I’d say it’s been at least 5 years since the last SMS I received.

People on Android rely on WhatsApp a lot because there’s no good messaging solution but for iPhone owners iMessage can’t be beaten. So many iPhone owners just keep WhatsApp because of their Android owning friends.

You're making some pretty strong assumptions.

Here in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) the majority of iPhone users do not use iMessage/SMS. Per the comments above for Germany and Spain, everybody uses WhatsApp in the UK almost exclusively - regardless of using iOS or Android. I have observed the same for France, Austria and Italy and Russia.

Back to your original comment:

^ that simply isn't true. It's pretty huge, and easily the most popular messaging platform for those on mobile devices for those in the countries referred to above.

Apologies. The statistics seems to have changed since I’ve looked into the numbers last.

Seems regional. Thailand, most use Line2. Philippines, I think Viber. US, seems like everyone I know has an iPhone (ergo, iMessage is automatically enabled and used).

SMS is universal. If you have a cellphone purchased in the last couple of decades, then you have SMS whether you want/use it or not.

SMS also works even if you don't have internet. Last time I went on vacation to PH, there were plenty of folks who had smartphones but didn't have data plans (or any load credits at all).

My friends and I mostly use FB Messenger (int'l contact) and SMS when in the same country.

I love my iPad Pro 10.5. I have been able to move 90% of my work to it and never thought that would be possible, I am ALMOST at the point where I could leave my MacBook home for a day.

The frustrating things I wish it had are as others mentioned, a Mouse, better file system, and I wish I didn’t need to subscribe to Office 365 to get full access. I would be fine paying 1 time like I did my MacBook.

But since I have been carrying it full time using the Apple Smart Keyboard, it has moved from being a consumption device to something I could get a lot of work done on.

I found I needed Excel to use the Pencil as point and input, to act as mouse. Why the lack of mouse support? Feels deliberate. Neuter it so it isn’t a full replacement.
