Microsoft is giving DropBox users 100GB of OneDrive storage to see if they can sway you away. There is no requirements for this other than you have to have both a dropbox and onedrive account.

Here is the link on Ubergizmo with the 'sign in' link in the article: http://www.ubergizmo.com/2015/02/dropbox-users-can-get-100gb-free-onedrive-storage/

Just got mine without issue, see below:

Thanks!! With the last 100gb promo and this one I have 237gb free, very nice. I love OneDrive, it's by FAR the best cloud service out there.

It would be even better if the upload speed wasn't so erratic and slow a lot of the time.

My upload speeds are great, I use it constantly during the day to sync my office files between all the PCs in my office and my PC's / SP3 at home. I don't upload large files though so maybe with larger files it gets odd. I do have hiccups in syncing Office files though more often than I'd like.

been thinking about making the move from drop box to one drive since I'm an office 365 subscriber but never had the courage to do so.

Plus OneDrive doesn't work as good on the Mac as it does in Windows.

Actually it is almost unusable. Here for me in the UK anyway. The speed is shocking.

I actually run a test once. I had a 1TB virtual machine I had to move and the only thing we had was One and Dropbox. The VM was split in 4 250GB files and I kicked off the transfer prior my vacation. I got back after two weeks and the transfer was at 5%.

Dropbox wasn't great either, but it was at 60%. Not sure if Microsoft changed it but One had a size limit for individual files too.

Just grabbed the free storage.

I use dropbox for my work files because I used it first and it has always worked seamlessly with 3 windows computers and 1 Mac.

I use my one drive just to back up all my photos. It does really well but I find it can have hiccups when backing up the photos from my phone.

Thanks for alerting us to this Lloyd! For some reason I can't get it to work on my office laptop. Will try again at home later, or perhaps on my iPad at lunch.

I just started using Google Drive cause the Dropbox app compresses photos too much. Going to give OneDrive a try too and see which one I like better.

I'm also doing this.

I just have so much confidence in Dropbox when it comes to reliable sync my work files. Also it provides full file versioning support, which has saved me on several occasions, and is something which OneDrive doesn't have.

I like the idea of OneDrive for my photos because it supports private tags, something that Google photos doesn't. Also because I'm pretty sure I will always have enough space on OneDrive for my photos even if I stop paying for it in the future. I'm not sure this would be the case with Dropbox. I just hope Microsoft improves the photo gallery / management experience especially on Android & iOS. This is where it lags behind iCloud, Google Photos, and Dropbox. Ideally I'd like them to release a dedicated photos app on these platforms.

The idea is to get you using the cloud and after you have filled to whole storage, you are forced to buy it forever  After a year you are so hooked into the cloud that you will pay whatever they ask.

For you dropbox guys does it still make you download a local copy of a document to edit it? One reason I switched from dropbox to OneDrive was I could edit documents right there online and it would sync up everywhere without having to download anything.

There was this story recently, but I haven't tried it: http://www.theverge.com/2015/2/5/7982259/dropbox-native-app-file-launching

I would assume integration with Office.com will turn up at some point, given that mobile versions of Office now integrate with Dropbox.

I'm not sure I can do this promotion since I'm an office365 subscriber and I already have a a terabyte of storage. Still its a nice promotion.

I do think Dropbox is faster, but if you use windows, then OneDrive is a great product. I have a mixed environment at home, so I prefer using OneDrive. I don't need to clutter up my Surface Pro with files, they can stay on the server. I wish the Mac version had that ability as well.

I've done it. Am now up to 1.1TB. But was really no point as I'm not going to be getting anywhere near to 1TB any time soon.

This is getting removed in Windows 10 I believe. In Windows 10, the OneDrive client will behave the same way as Dropbox (selective sync instead of OS-integrated placeholders), unless there are more features yet to be added to the preview version.

I'm no where near the terabyte mark, and it being only a year's worth of storage. So year, I'll not be using the storage - its nice to know its open to me though.

Hmm, I really like the placeholders. Makes it seem like the files are there, but don't take up space until you need to download them. Sounds like a major step backwards.

Yeah, step back in one respect. But there were problems with the use of placeholders that needed addressing: https://blog.onedrive.com/taking-the-next-step-in-sync-for-onedrive/

The end of that blog post suggests placeholder-like capabilities will eventually return.

I've run into synchronization issues, with OneDrive from time to time but overall, I really do like the use of placeholders. If they do go by the board, I'll be disappointed.

With that said, I'm glad I have a 256GB SP3, some people were espousing a smaller model because you can store all your data on the OneDrive and then pull down what you need. If this ability is removed they'll be having issues.

I definitely disagree with their viewpoint. Placeholders shouldn't really confuse anyone if they are explained to the consumer, it's not that difficult of a concept although I'm constantly surprised at the seemingly simple stuff that trips up your average consumer. A major benefit of cloud storage is being able to save space on your physical hard drive. I'd hate to have to go to the website or app just to see what files I have, going straight into file explorer from the desktop is incredibly convenient and intuitive and a huge selling point for onedrive over other cloud solutions.

I've never had an issue with downloading a placeholder, although I have seen issues with copy and such and the best solution was to download the file, definitely something they need to work on. The most onerous issue I've had is Hotmail won't let you upload an attachment if it's a placeholder, you need to download it locally first before you attach it. Not a big deal since they are small files and I'm ok with that.

I've never had sync issues either, and I use OneDrive sync constantly between all my work PC's, home PC and surface pro. The sync issues I do have are with Office and usually it seems like it's an issue with being signed on to multiple computers. I've learned to leave these sync errors alone and eventually they would sync up. Other sync errors include if the file is open on one PC, it won't sync or even allow you to edit it in another PC and sometimes even when you close the file it gets stuck in limbo and refuses to sync anywhere, forcing you to copy it and delete the original just to get it to sync, once again seems more like an Office issue.

Hopefully they reintroduce it, it's something that differentiates them from the competition.

I think the removal of placeholders is a step back. MS has been doing a really good job innovating and bringing some nice products to fruition. Windows 10 is a good example of how a stable and polished product is - even if its just a technical preview. I think removing such a nice and useful feature goes against that grain.

Just in case no one has heard. Microsoft introduced unlimited OneDrive space for 365 subscribers. I verified with MS that even though you see 1TB the space will increase as you need more. Just throwing that out there. :)
