What are some good online shooters that are free and actually have people on them? I've been itchin' for a good shooting rampage.

World of Padman
http://padworld.myexp.de/index.php?files
(Don't forget the 1.2 patch. This is free shooter the best-looking graphics--but it's a little weird. Several game modes, and it has bots too!)

Tremulous
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/action_adventure/tremulous.html
(I just installed this one--people seem to LOVE it even though the graphics are a little dated, so I'm giving it a shot. It's a class-bases team shooter where you upgrade--if human--or evolve--if alien--and try to wipe out the enemy.)

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
http://www.splashdamage.com/node/57
(I'm not in to WWII games, but I very much like the sequel, Quake Wars, and I know this free game has an active base. Class-based shooter with objectives to attack/defend. Bots are an optional mod, I believe.)

Those three are definitely worthwhile. And a couple others (pretty much DM) that may have communities (Nexuiz does I'm pretty sure) but I never got into them:

Nexuiz
http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz
(I think one zip contains all platforms?)

Sauerbraten (formerly Cube)
http://sauerbraten.org/
(Has computer-controlled enemies to fight through--monsters, not regular bots.)

As for demos: they can be fun, but be aware that many of them were never updated for Intel processors, even if the PAID game was updated.

The only good online free FPS available right now is without a doubt WOLFENSTION ENEMY TERRITORY. There is still a good amount of players online, the game is actually really good. It's team based game with different classes. With good teamwork it's a blast.

America's Army is great, too. It's used to be Linux, Mac, and Windows, but they dropped support for the first two, leaving only Windows.

However, the game is excellent. Graphics are great, lots of players, all around good game. If you play, just get used to the rounds... they just take a while to get used to if you die fast.

Yeah i got Nexuiz and enjoyed it, and as for America's Army, I got it, but it ran very slow, even on the lowest setting, which was weird, cuz my computer should have been able to handle that. Any ideas?

I got a new iMac,

Processor : 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory : 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

if that means anything to you guys it would really help me out.

oh heck yeah i got that. i just wish some more mature people would play more often then the little 7 year old who kicks your butt at halo and then rubs your face in it  i dont know, i'll try it.

Battle Field 2 by EA is always fun. There are always a ton of people online too. I've been addicted to it for the past 2 yrs :D

Edit: Do you mean free as in online subscription or totally free?

:) well thanks. I decided to ask on here since I was sick of google search =P

Not the ONLY good one ;) World of Padman is extremely slick and commercial-quality--and Urban Terror sounds like it might be (but the theme is not my cup of tea).

However, WET is worth learning, if it's anything like Quake Wars (which I know it is).

Ok i got ET, but it takes forever to download stuff. I just want to play. I never hav gotten a chance to play cuz it takes so long! Any pointers?

Surley CS

Has anyone heard of the custom built Steam for leapord??
A friend in the Macstore told me of it but just really curious!

Yoshi

yeah same problem here.

DId you try to install the 2.6 patch? That failed as well, saying I was missing a component. Not sure whether its me or the servers.

On the positive side, Tremulous installed and works fine. Have also dl'ed World of Padman and Urban Terror overnight so will see how they perform this evening.

The latest version of americas army for macs is for PPC macs not intel ones so it runs under rosetta which is why it runs slow.

You need to download the windows version and run it under bootcamp.

he probably means using it thru crossover games. it costs $40 or something (plus money for steam games and stuff), but it is awesome if you play a lot of source based games (hl2 and stuff)
