I think you need to take statistics such as these with a grain of salt. When the time draws near and they have a couple in store to try before they hit the shelves for purchase this may change, if this is even an accurate number.

With the world population currently nearing seven billion, Apple better get busy making 630 million iPads...

"The percentage of people who know of the device and do not want one doubled after the announcement".

Duh - now everyone has heard of the thing.
This is a meaningless poll, and speculation based on it is time wasted. Where can I get my last minute of life back?

The only stats that mean anything will be 2010 year-end sales stats.

Pure and utter nonsense. IPad will be a hit from day one.

Even using their "statistics", the number who said they want one went from 3% to 9%.

This is only as meaningful as the statistical methodology underpinning the survey, combined with the reality that opinions and purchase decisions about gadgets change on a dime.

My guess is that Apple will sell far more than most expect.

The people that made ISHTAR never thought they were making a bomb
The people that made Slumdog Millionaire never thought they were making a hit.

Time is the only way to determine what will happen.

If 9% actually do buy the iPad, it'll be a huge success. Not as big as the iPod, but bigger than the mac. I think it will be successful, but I would be surprised if sales where as good as 9%.

9% of the US population is like 25 million... Anyone who'd call that a failure is nuts. Even if you cut it in half, it's still a wild success... and the device hasn't even been released yet. Nobody has even had held one in their hands - which is how a lot of them will be sold.

The survey and some of your reactions are hilarious.

Seriously folks. The iPad will sell. To what degree - who knows. And you can discuss, argue, praise, etc all you want - but at the end of the day - it means nothing until time has passed to see what actually happens.

Success - even then will be relative to expectations - both from the industry, the pundits, wall street and the consumer.

It's remarkable that this "survey" by retrevo is being used as evidence of anything or that any opinion should be formed on its basis.

It has no scientific validity whatsoever.

Retrevo is an internet outlet for low cost computing products. The "survey" is a web survey from visitors to their own site.

It isn't a survey of the general public. In fact, it's sampling a highly biased subset of the population, specifically bargain hunters.

I just conducted my own survey using identical sampling techniques and have found that, contrary to retrevo's dubious findings, 100% of my sample size will be purchasing an iPad.

My main gripe with this isn't that I believe 9% of the general population to be a small number. My annoyance is that retrevo's survey is completely meaningless.

Nice to see someone noticed this.

Retrevo users aren't exactly your Average Joe.

9% of what?

The world's population - 580 million buyers.
The citizens of the USA - 27 million buyers.
The inhabitants of the Stato della Città del Vaticano - 83 buyers.

Mandarin speaking people - 76 million buyers.

And so on...

If 9% of the people in America by an iPad that would be sales of 27 million.

If 9% of the people who own an iPhone or iPod Touch bought an iPad that would be sales well over 6 million.

In either case a pretty massive success.

I am thinking you didn't realize what 9% is.

Right now on raw numbers little over 1% of the world has an iPhone or iPod Touch.

So 9% is massive, by whatever metric you use to choose.

Retrevo sounds like the kind of place where cheap pc users shop. The price first crowd. Netbooks are more their speed, anyway.
