Nexus and Mytouch have nothing to do with the ipad... but thanks for playing...

That's a bit uncalled for. The poster didn't say they were related. He was just indicating a "bar" at which he plans on measuring "success" in his eyes. Feel free to have your own "bar"

Why don't they? I think as a comparison of sales at launch, it's reasonable isn't it?

And if, as you say, they have nothing to do with the iPad, why don't you suggest something you think does and bring something constructive to the discussion?

The problem for Apple is that to sell 'only' a number that would be a huge success for any other company, is considered a failure.

How many gear makers would kill to have sold as many of their gizmos as Apple has sold AppleTV's?

We expect a 3rd quarter onside kick EVERY PRODUCT LAUNCH from Apple. Sometimes they just win the game and make a zillion dollars. Sometimes they do it spectacularly.

There are so many variables that go into setting the bar... Like with the Nexus One... it was mass NOT marketed, their bar was low because it was a new business model... so 20,000 phones maybe was "successful" to them...

If mercades sells 300,000 C series and Iphone sells One million Iphones... whats your measure of success? they are 2 UNrelated businesses...

Just like tablet/netbook is different from Smartphone...

Now if the HP Slate sells 50,000 in its first week and Ipad Sell 75k... then you can say the Ipad is successful compared to OTHER COMPETITORS...

get it?

Meh, this thing will probably sell around 10 million units this year. Next year you will get a 32gb with a front facing camera and and some other spec bump (battery to 12hrs, processor boost, or sd card slot built-in) for $399. The OS will also advance further, and it will be able to do 90% of the things that a desktop can do, and 99% of the things that most people use computers for on a daily basis. Larger developers will begin jumping on board, including some from the PC world. Mac market share will increase a little bit more, iPhones will be selling like hotcakes, and Apple will be fine just like they are now, but closing in on $50b cash reserves.

I'll be buying the 32gb Wifi iPad for college use, and in two more years, a 3rd gen 256gb iPad with 4g wireless that (maybe) uses that Apple patent with a solar charger built into the screen/bezel as a college grad present to myself. I'll then gift the old one to my grandparents if they haven't purchased one yet.

Interesting to note that at my school, Missouri State University, in the design program, there are many students who are excited about getting an iPad. Though these are already Mac users for the most part--except for maybe two, one of which has an iPod Touch. My wife is also interested in getting one eventually, and her only Apple experience is my first-gen iPhone that she uses as an iPod Touch. I tend to believe that most people won't buy one right away, especially in this economy, but are looking to pick one up sometime in the next year. Especially once any potential bugs are worked out and the OS is updated to 4.0.

These polls are always a ways off.

There is no way to judge how successful or unsuccessful this device will be. A poll can't have that accurate of results with such a limited testing pool.

Now, with that said, it's almost ridiculous to not think that the iPad will do well.

It's a new device from Apple. People love the iPod touch, people will love the iPad, and then some.

you're right it's not accurate. I used the nexus one and the g1 as my frame of comparison because we don't have any comparable tablet device out in the market yet. However, they are still somewhat comparable because they're all mobile devices.

For another comparison, According to estimates. Amazon sold 500,000 Kindle's in 2008 (the entire year).

Another one. Microsoft said 500,000 Tablet PCs were sold in 2002/2003 (1 yr).

Exactly, so success will only be measured by apple until there is a competitor out there.

But by apples own admission it should be "compared" netbooks... but the IPad is not a computer...

Well that was my OWN definition of success. ;)

Also, the iPad is a computer. just not a computer by todays definition.

A computer by apples defination I guess...

But that poses an interesting question, if the ipad is a computer by a generic term... then what is a

desktop computer? A ipad you can sit on your desk
Laptop computer? a ipad in you lap...

lol Im just being silly, but todays definition of a computer still stands... if the Ipad is a computer... then so is the itouch, Iphone, and my logitech harmony one LOL
