Which is fine, but would you have bought 4GB of ram then to future proof yourself? Eventually 1080p streaming from NF will become the norm and when it does there will be devices out there that are better than any device available today.

Ding, Ding, Ding, we got a winner!

One of the worst financial mistakes that you can make is to "future proof" electronic purchases as no one knows what the future really holds.

If you are buying a more advance unit for something longer than six months into the future you have a high risk of wasting your (extra) money.

I have done that in the past with both TV and computer purchases.

If in two years, real quality 1080p streams are available I will buy the new product to take advantage of it. I bet none of the so called 1080p devices sold today will work well with that future stream. (Maybe the PS3?)

On a side note, I have a 32" 720p in the bedroom and a 46" 1080p 120 Hz in the family room. I need a new 37" for the basement. Even though 720p is good enough for that size, I will buy 1080p. The reason is not "future proof" but stupid marketing. All of the manufactures have so cut the features and quality of their 720p sets that I am forced into 1080p to get the quality that I want.

Definitely the PS3. I just streamed a movie at 1080p from Vudu the other night. Great quality and not a single hiccup throughout.

I agree that you shouldn't buy too much in the future. But it isn't that black and white. If no one moves, nothing will happen.

Consumer: "I don't buy a 1080p player because there is no content"
Provider: "I won't supply 1080p content because there are no players"
Manufacturer "I won't develop 1080p players because there is no market"

In any market you need early adopters.
