Sucess - well eventually with NextSIM version 1 & 2
Hello all,
Well after the last week I thought I should write up my experience with NextSIM.
I ordered a NextSIM from Ebay (US) to 'unlock' my OOB 1.1.2. The NextSIM was delivered fast, well packaged, but with NO instructions. Yet, Im a university student this should be a piece of cake
We cut our current SIM as required to fit the next sim 'processor' within the confines of the Iphone SIM tray. Now, due to the fact we had concerns RE the suitability (and the sellers promise to take back a failed unlocked SIM) and also the eventual thickness of carrier SIM and piggy back SIM, we didn't double side adhesive tape the NextSIM to the carrier's SIM .
THIS WAS A BIG, BIG (REPEAT AFTER ME), BIG MISTAKE!
Initially, we inserted two Australian carriers modified SIMs. What was blatantly obvious was how tight the inserted SIMs felt (proof of Apples fine engineering). If it was a girl in bed you'd be stoked BUT when it's inserting SIMs into your 'love of your life' Apple Iphone - Uggghhhh

. Yet, they seemed to go in and out OK. We had to use a knife blade to remove the SIM tray enough to get grip of both tray, carrier SIM and NextSIM but it when in and out3 - 4 times for testing various carrier SIMs.
Now, the NextSIM V.1 Australian carrier result:
1. Telstra pre-paid 2G SIM - Unlocked.
2. Optus 3G SIM but 2G contract - FAILED.
3. My account SIM 3G SIM- FAILED
Pleased be assured the seller made it know that "3G carriers such as '3' wouldn't work". It is however - Any 3G SIM regardless of 'plan contract' etc. Could some SIM specialist let us know of the SIM card differences? (Initial looks at SIMS suggest 'grounding' or '# of SIM contacts'????) As such, I returned the Telstra pre-paid and cursed my luck. Little was I know it was going to get much much worse.
I applied to my carrier for a 2G specific SIM. One week later it finally arrived (note - I can get a NextSIM from Hong Kong in 3 days BUT a carrier SIM from Sydney a week). It arrived, modified it to suit the NextSIM. Went to swap Telstra SIM out to put in my carrier SIM? WTF - I cannot get out the SIM tray. Barely moved out 1 mm, maybe 1.5 when we used the authorised Apple SIM removal tool - the paperclip.
I could not grab the tray to pull with our fingers as there was too little of the tray exposed to grab onto. I eventually had to use a small pair of pliers to gain some purchase on the tray. Yet, the tray seemed to be stuck.
Finally, after using a significant amount of force (and a massive amount of fear - no Apple warranty for me) the tray came out with the original SIM but not the NextSIM. The NextSIM was stuck in the Iphone sim slot. After an hour of effort - I was able to remove the NextSIM from the Iphone internals using fine tools and some tweezers. Then, I noticed two things, half of the top edge of the NextSIM was crumpled and the small IC chip was gone from the NextSIM. A search of the floor found the NextSIM IC chip.
What I have worked out is that the NextSIM curled up so that when we tried to remove the SIM tray it became caught on the inside edge of the Iphone's internal sim tray holder. At that point, the NextSIM was jammed in and the IC chip was holding the main SIM card from being able to be removed. Eventually, the IC chip came off letting the original SIM card and tray to come out whilst the NextSIM stayed in the phone. I guess that this proves how 'strong' this circuit board actually is .
So to my point ensure you double side tape the NextSIM to your original sim.
Anyway, to cut the story short, I have acquired a NextSIM Version 2 which supports 3G SIM cards. Got a new carrier SIM card from my local shop. Recut the carrier SIM, taped the edges, applied the NextSIM2 to my SIM. Pressed down, inserted (much easier this one), and bingo. The build quality (thickness) is much better. I can actually get the SIm tray out with the authorised paper clip and finger with version 2.
As a quick summary, Ill edit more later:
1. NextSIM V.1 (obvious by top central chip) does NOT work with 3G sims. But worked. Thicker circuit board is difficult to insert and , maybe, impossible to remove
2. NextSIM V.2 (chip in the slanted corner of your SIM), worked with 3G SIM, much thinner better construction, and worked with 3G SIM.
However, there are limitations. Considering you have to tape your piggy back SIM to your carrier SIM, swapping the NextSIM to other SIMs? Dont think so. This is one advantage a software unlock has over this solution.
If you have a OOB 1.1.2 phone and want it carrier unlocked my experience suggest this product ( Version 2) will work with 2G & 3G carrier SIMs.
A good day to all.
