Back in 2007 when Crysis was being photo realistic, we had Quake 4 on id Tech 4.
Which was released in 2005 on a engine released in 2004.

But yesh, it will be interesting to see what happens in the near future.

maybe steam will help in this regard, giving more attention to osx gaming. ios gaming can't hurt either too

id Tech 4, like Source, Cryengine... etc are all old engines that have been upgraded. It's not necessarily a 2004 engine in the same way that the latest Source build isn't a 2004 engine as well.
Farcry 2 uses a heavy modified Cryengine 1, after all.

Imo the two are not easily comparable, Direct3D (the graphics part of DirectX, which consists of more than just graphics libraries) is an Api heavily focused on gaming and has tons of calls useful for that, whereas OpenGL is a generic graphics library with lots of functions not directly related to game developing.
D3D calls "unchain" the code from a specific hardware, in OpenGL you are in charge of writing the actual implementation. On top of that using OpenGL in your actual code is not that easy, because of it generic nature there is scarce documentation for a specific target.

In game development, where hardware resources are a priority, proprietary libraries are your best bet to deliver a solid code, have a look at PS3 very customised ones for a taste. I think Apple is having an hard time adapting a generic api for such a customised environment as macs are.

Recently however, thanks mainly to the iPhone coding frenzy, OpenGL ES is steadily growing, and I start to see a bright future in mobile development, where there's no long history of graphics development and nonspecific libraries can pay.

DirectX is good... i just wish somehow MS was forced to license it out so versions can be made for Macs and Linux... They purposefully make sure its only on Win and xbox to help keep their monopoly.

Good point, but the engine is still certainly older than the cryengine.

Tech 5 looks nice but around the corner we have UE4, CryEngine 3 and whatever major update Valve has planned for Source. Chances are they will all be on par with one another.

And what do you want to bet that all but one of those (CryEngine 3) will be available for Mac on OGL?

It's being ported to the PS3 so there will be OpenGL support at least. But EA are the publishers so yea... Cider.

Exactly why open gl is better because its not limited to being a profit driven api. dx could be alot better than it is today if ms would licence, but they are too greedy, they would much rather force you to buy their terrible os and keep pushing the piece of sH#T xbox.

thats one of the main reasons alot of pc owners don't switch to mac, because of limited software and games that require dx support. why else wouldn't they switch to mac, they know its better.

windows is all hype and marketing, not that the two are a bad thing, but if you are using that to fool people into buying a sH#T product than you are just playing dirty.

not saying ms should just give in because apple is far better, but maybe they could learn something from them instead of just trying to rip everyone off. the only problem is the company doesn't really know how to get back to its roots, because it was based on this same kind of ideologies in the first place.

"500,000 people surveyed, and 42% of 360s had to be replaced. 55% of those people had to have it replaced more than once."

www.****xbox.com

clear example of ms trash polluting the market.

You really like repeating how horrible Microsoft is, don't you?

By the way, that link isn't a link.

Sorry about the link, the messed it up because of the 4 *'s. I'll give you a hint for the 4 letter word, it starts with an F.

I'd rather stop my criticism of ms and speculate on the possibilities of dx on mac osx. Both are things not likely to happen.

I have iphone, MBP and PS3 and I'm no MS fan. I still regret that I didn't buy XBox instead of the PS3. Cheaper, more exclusives and the graphics are equal. Don't see what's wrong with Xbox except the high failure rate. EU requires two year mandatory warranty period so I don't see even that as a major problem. Wouldn't have bothered to mention this in a topic related to DX vs OG if not for appleater's derogatory comments.

Wrong. They "know" that PC is better and consider mac users snobbish imbeciles who can't handle a PC but instead need an "easy" option.

Edit: his link is complete trash, even as irony. Use your time better and go check some raving conspiracy sites with flashing texts.

Its no secret that ms uses dirty marketing tactics to push their rubbish hardware and software. & easier to use interface is just anouther reason why mac is better, I guess that makes you a snobbish imbecile.

Dirty marketing tactics? Describe, please. That might have been true fifteen years ago but Microsoft isn't the same company anymore.

Also, Windows 7 is very nice - I have it on all of my Macs.
