Call Verizon, then Apple. Either should issue an exchange immediately. That’s a bummer.

My luck, I’d keep it and the gouges would start flaking and get worse.

I see you called already, good luck, and congrats on the new phone 🥳👌
I don’t think Apple would do anything for a product with this circumstance that wasn’t purchased directly from them. The vendor is Verizon. Verizon will be the one to take care of it.

First batch(es) of Apple produces always have more hardware defects. My guess is that the first batches are rushed or they have not figured out the best process.

I have stopped doing pre-orders or buying at launch entirely for this reason, having done it for many years and received (to differing severely) defective devices 100% of the time.

Then I broke my own rule and bought the iPhone 14 Pro because I had to -- my old phone was breaking -- and it came with a freaking loose lightning port, so that it would charge on and off when plugged in or when I jiggle it when plugged in. Absurd, but other people reported the same thing on here.

Now I buy newly released devices only January or February at the earliest. I have not gotten any devices with hardware defects since I started doing this.

Whenever I mentioned this I have to preempt the knee-jerk Apple defenders on here who'd say, "Mine was perfect. Mine was perfect. Mine was perfect." Yes, I KNOW most people received flawless devices. But it is also a fact that more people receive defective devices when they first launch.
I believe you. My iPad has a lightning port issue too.

It looks like a possible manufacturing process defect. I would definitely return it. I have seen such before with different products over the years. This kind of thing happens with every brand not just Apple.

I agree. However I like to have the holydays extended return window so I’m probably buy an M4 or M4Pro Mac Mini soon…

You sure it’s not glue or something? My brand new m4 13 had some dried glue (I think?) on it that looked very similar to yours in basically the same location, but I was able to rub it off (was tough, had to use my fingernail to scrape it off)

Do you know what old people like me did before the internet? We just went 'oh dear I appear to have bought the damaged one' (not exactly those words) and took it back for an exchange. No need for a public drama. I mean literally how many of these things are they making in a day? Must be hundreds if not thousands. Obviously there's going to be a few that are damaged. And no, randon QC'ing won't find them all.

Ask the retailer for an exchange. It's not Apple's problem, nor the internet's. It's just an "ah well, sh*t happens" moment.

God help us. We're literally just a few years away from the eldest Gen Alphas moving into their first homes and asking the internet what to do because their toilet roll has ran out.
