I have opened and all but completely taken apart my MBP... it wasnt booting, so I usually try self repairs (if its cheap and easy to get parts for, or if its just a loose cable/ribbon) before sending it in... I came to conclusion that it was the mainboard that fried out, something that I would rather have fixed for free than to buy and replace myself.
Called Apple, setup the repair... and sent it off... four days later its back in my hands fixed and ready to go!
Just be-careful, use the proper tools, and you shouldn't get a voided warranty. These things take some patience and gentle "tech hands".
