Two things:

I Think your comment is an overstatement, you are in the ‘alternative forum’, where you will find other members who don’t necessarily favor Apple entirely compared to the competition, which is understandable, not every comment has to praise Apple for everything they do. [And I say that as an Apple supporter, but I try to be objective to all competition, which includes Oppo, Samsung, Huwaei, ect .]

Secondly, I read every comment in this thread on page 1 and I didn’t read anyone ‘encouraging derailing’ as you labeled it. It seems like others are having a simple discussion mixed with semantics, it’s harmless, which ironically, your own comment actually doesn’t seem fitting for this topic.

That’s not what I meant. This thread wasn’t even about Apple.

I came in here thinking people would be focussed on the topic at hand. But once again, it veered off course, with the usual suspects back slapping cliché comments that’d get 500 likes on YouTube. Habitual for some

Anyway, this tech has popped up much sooner than I expected. It’d be the smartphone world’s biggest turnaround if Google got a hold of this tech & included it in the Pixel 4 - they’d go from the deepest notch one year, to nothing. Long shot...

Not only the camera but all of the biometrics. Retinal scan, Face ID etc. under the display may or may not be suitable for all of this stuff. Even the under display Qualcomm FPS has gotten mixed reviews.

I always disregard any new tech that comes out of companies like OPPO, VIVO, XIAOMI, and all those low end brands that comes out of China. They always try to be the first and think thats very important for some reason? The world is not going to perceive them as technically superior in any way...quite the opposite actually most are stolen patents anyway.

The reasons why I ignore and disregard them is because it isn't really advanced tech. If you take away existing features in order to make another work, its not advance tech...its compromise. Take the fingerprint sensor in the screen for example. I don't remember who was first but it was those low end brands I wrote above. It works only 50% of the time and my finger HAS to be 99% accurately in the location. Then Samsung came along with the same concept but with a different tech, a more advanced one (internally and technically completely different). Works flawlessly.

These companies are trying to become the first to everything in order to change their brand perception on an internationally level. But in reality, these companies don't really use advance tech at all, check out a patent Samsung created in 2011 with an embedded camera in their oled screen....they did not implement this because it does not work effectively and will taint user experience. These brands don't care about user experience and use tech that bigger companies like Apple and Samsung chose not to use because these Chinese companies have nothing to lose.

I like to call these "advancements" by these low end companies as 'dirt tech'. Its not really advanced tech. In my experience, real innovation comes from companies that doesn't make compromises and actually uses advanced tech like Apple and Samsung and others.

Remember...all these innovations were possible by other big companies waaaay back but they CHOSE not to use it in their devices. The difference is that these Chinese companies are actually implementing ****** tech in the devices they sell at half baked.

Nothing special. Doesn't count when these guys do it. I will wait for proper innovations from real tech companies.

Points well made & I agree.

I also think that if these half-baked efforts by the Chinese brands didn’t happen, the bigger companies would take longer to implement them.

Despite them being poor incarnations, the bigger brands have to take note & make their move sooner rather than later, which would be the case if no one nudged them along.

Interesting how you mention Samsung being the patient one. They’re almost the ‘Apple’ of the Android world in this regard - not rushing to be the first, but instead observing & refining the initial implementations of next gen smartphone features.

So you call the companies that are now pushing Samsung and Apple to innovate, “dirt tech”? Wow I have now officially read it al in this forum.

Companies like OPPO have advanced a lot of things including Fast Charging and In-Display Fingerprint Readers, let’s also not forget bringing Persicope cameras to smartphones to allow levels of zoom that are unparalleled in the mobile world while retaining a slim phone.

These are the companies that actually allowing those of us who like to try new things have a go at them. OPPO has also been very clear at the fact that this under display camera tech is still a work in-progress.

By your assessment, the Galaxy Fold is a clear example of “dirt tech”.

Quite shocking to read in a tech forum someone bashing companies that are trying to move the industry forward. If you do not like the Chinese then just say so and end it there.

This is the same nonsense I used to see people posting about Samsung and LG back when they were the new ones on the block while Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericsson were the leaders, people would make such statements about them, when they were also trying to differentiate themselves.

Let’s not forget Samsung put a useless Fingerprint Scanner in the Galaxy S5 and had us believing MicroUSB3.0 was the way forward.

Every OEM at some point tries to make something groundbreaking and even if their implementation is not the best, it at the very least gets everyone curious and going on that particular feature.

Guess everyone does “dirt tech” wtf kinda term is that anyway
