Yes, it's an app, not a native function of OS but the watch is on your wrist so you don't have to take the phone out of pocket at all. It's so much easier.
Don't have an AW at the moment but do apps blank out after awhile? Like I will be able to have the app open at work but still have a black screen? I don't want to be walking around work with the Pokemon app open all day. Can't do that anyways.

It will blank out after a while but it will light up (and maybe Taptic feedback?) when there's something for you.
 
So it's exactly like the phone app? I already walk with my phone on in my pocket, I was hoping I wouldn't need the app opened at all to get steps to count.
that's the major annoyance with the app, it does not run in background, but i see why they'd want it like that.
is it the same for the apple watch app? do you need to have the app always open on top on the watch too?

Still, it shouldn't be necessary to launch the app on the iPhone or watch. There are other apps that an read steps without running in the background. As long as you give them permission to do so, they will read the steps you've taken from the Health app each time you launch them. This is a conscious decision by the developer, and I get it: They want you to open the app as frequently, and for as long, as possible.

Are there? How do they know it without running in the background? Even an exercise you still have to launch Activities.
If they simply use recorded steps then it's different since Pokemon is a real-time game.

The Health app is continuously logging steps taken that are recorded by the Apple Watch with no workout running. Lose-it is an app I run for weight management and I have given it permission to read steps and workouts (among other things) from Health. Each time I open Lose-it the app updates its data by reading from the Health app. Lose-it does not have to be open and running. It can.simply pull the data recorded since the previous update. Pokemon Go could do the same, but for true distance I suppose it would need to read from walking workouts where the iPhone GPS measures the distance rather than calculating it based on steps.

I understand that. That's why I said Pokemon is different because it is real-time game. It's no point to see data later.

i get that it's a real time game, but it is also a game that blurs the line between the real world and the game world. Hatching an egg is based on how many KM you walk and not whether you are actively engaged with the game during that time. I walk 10km on many days, but most of that time I don't have the game open to get the credit. Sometimes I just forget and other times my battery is too low. Since hatching eggs is based on walking distance, it would be nice to get the credit, but I get why it doesn't work that way. As I said before they want you to play the game and be engaged with it. I will probably be more likely to have it running on my watch. We will see.

It works. It's really hard to catch Pokemon -- they zoom by quickly -- but you can play.

The game will also sense the speed and warn you with a dialog box saying, "DO NOT PLAY WHILE DRIVING". Tap the button that says, "I'm a passenger" and you can continue.

Of course it's easy to play in a car. Always has been. Now it sucks because you don't get any egg distance in a car anymore like you used to. Unless you are driving slow enough where the game thinks you are walking.
