Optimized Battery Charging does not work well for me, the hours always exceed the time when I wake up. Recently I permanently disabled the option, but after 2 or 3 days the option was automatically activated, is this a bug?

I am using iOS version 14.2 (iPhone 11 Pro max)

I believe it's a bug, (turns back on after resetting phone) happens to me when I restart my 12 PM. I have never used this feature as I shift work.

It worked on my XS but after having a 12 Pro still not working after close to a month

has this bug been fixed? it keeps turning on & it's annoying. I wake up with 80% instead of 100%

Even with it enabled the way it works is that it should be at 100% by the time you typically disconnect from the charger.

well it hasn't worked and the toggle should work if I want the feature turned off. 20% battery is about 2 hours of use for me

Can those who said "It doesn't/hasn't worked" elaborate? It never prevents charging to 100%? It doesn't resume charging soon enough to reach 100% by the time you disconnect it? I'm curious what that refers to as I've left the feature enabled but the limit has never activated -- likely because my iDevices aren't connected to a charger for a long period after they've reached 100%. Typically, I disconnect the device within an hour.

Apple said:
With iOS 13 and later, Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80% in certain situations. Your iPhone uses on-device machine learning to learn your daily charging routine so that Optimized Battery Charging activates only when your iPhone predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time. The algorithm aims to ensure that your iPhone is still fully charged when unplugged.

Optimized charging is designed to engage only in locations where you spend the most time, such as your home and place of work. The feature doesn't engage when your usage habits are more variable, such as when you travel. Because of this, some location settings must be enabled for Optimized Battery Charging to activate. None of the location information used for this feature is sent to Apple.

it does not resume charging soon enough to reach 100% by the time I disconnect. Was put on the charger around midnight and never went above 80%. In the morning it was at 80% instead of 100%. I don't care about battery health, I upgrade every year. So I don't want this feature and a toggle should work.

Understood, and I'm not disputing the anger about the on-off toggle switch bug.

Sadly/annoyingly, it's not surprising. Except for a couple of exceptions, e.g. Apple Silicon, Apple has been about quantity over quality since Cook took charge. Not to say Jobs was perfect but Apple has had consistent fails as of recent years.

I think it doesnt work for me because I had "Significant Locations" off in the settings

This is what worked for me:

Go into Settings--->Privacy--->Location Services--->System Services--->Significant Locations

I went in and cleared my history on my launch day 12 Pro Max the very first day, and by this past weekend, the 21st/22nd (so 8-9 days) it started to work fine again and have my iPhone charged to 100% when I woke up.

Not saying it will work for everyone, but it is worth a shot. It just clears your location history and learns everything over again, including your home.

Good luck everyone!

In my experience, it doesn't work unless you stick to a fairly rigid schedule. Even if my sleep schedule fluctuates by an hour, it throws the whole thing off.
Again, simply curious... Fluctuating wake time, bed time, or either?

When I say it doesn't work it's because optimized battery charging has never kicked in after having my new phone for around a month . All is set as it should but my significants locations shown are only until Oct 29th .
I had Maps turned off in iCloud because it showed places I've been years ago and it bugged me. Today I turned it back on and it looks like I can remove them finally ( so far..).
I cleared previous locations in Significant locations and will now wait to see if optimized battery finally kicks in in a few days .
I just want to add that everything worked fine on my previous phone ( XS ).

because of the way this function is designed, its operation leaves much to be desired... that if you can get it to start working... since I restored my XS, more than two weeks ago, it has not started working yet... I still do not understand what the location paints in all this, because it is the great stumbling block, especially if we take into account the inaccuracy with which the gps works inside... One day he locates me at my house number, and the next he says that I am on the sidewalk in front... so it is impossible for it to work...

Wake time. Based on what I've noticed, it charges relatively quickly to 80% regardless of when you go to sleep but waits until the very last bit to complete charging. Now, mine seems to give up on this entirely and just goes straight to charged and holds there.

It pains me, but it turns out this is a feature, not a bug.

• System Customization: Your iPhone will customize system appearance, behaviors, and settings using your current location, for example by automatically enabling Optimized Battery Charging when you are at home.

I have an iPhone 7 that's afflicted with terrible battery life after installing iOS 14, as documented, commented on, complained and whined about sufficiently elsewhere that I'm not going down that rabbithole today. That said, I read (also elsewhere) that the battery draining is related to optimized charging and that a simple fix is to disable optimized charging and then allow the iPhone to deplete the battery completely before re-charging.

Seemed like a simple fix so I gave it a try. Seemed to work for a day, that's when I found out optimized charging is a zombie feature (i.e.) won't die and eats at your brain.

Hope this helps. Your KPH may vary.

Edit - should have mentioned that my hope is that by turning off system customizations I can also turn off optimized charging and thereby get my battery life back to where it was on iOS 13.

I've always had that system setting disabled and it seems that battery optimization still gets automatically turned on. Seems like that part of it is still a bug of some sort.

That aside, while I've heard of some talk about the optimized charging option having some sort of an effect on battery drain since iOS 13 days or so, I can't say that it has really held up -- it seemed like it mostly came in the context of a bunch of different settings and things that people would try to bring up to try when looking for something related to battery drain that they might be experiencing.

Can you please explain where to find the system customization toggle?

I can't argue with that. I'm looking for anything that might help and definitely clutching at straws.

Whether it's a bug or a highly sophisticated piece of machine learning software with a boatload of unintended consequences is up for discussion I suppose. Hard to see the difference from where I'm sat. :)
