It was working for about 2 weeks and now it just stopped.. Not sure what changed. It just stopped giving the notification on the lock screen and when you look at the charging graph it clearly shows that it isn't stopping at 80%. It just charges to 100% with no pause. Kind of odd Apple doesn't give much info on it except what needs to be enabled for it to work.

. Mine is the same. Worked fine for about 3 weeks, then I set up an automation to switch on low power mode when the phone was put on charger, then changed my mind and deleted the automation. Optimised charging stopped working the same day, don’t know if the actions are linked

I went to the Apple support forum and there's a 11 page thread on the subject and it was suggested that you make sure all the location services that are necessary for optimized charging to work are enabled (mine were as it was working before) and to go into battery health and turn off "optimized charging" for 12-24 hours. Then hard restart the phone. When you restart the phone, it automatically turns optimized charging back on and see if it eventually starts working (might take a couple days). Yesterday night it started working for me again so hopefully it continues to do so but it stopped for no reason before and I'll just have to wait and see...

Since I changed phones optimized battery charging was not working. Finally a couple of day ago I did a reset of Location & Privacy and since last evening it's been working again .

I did this yesterday. I only turned optimised charging off for about 6 hours, rebooted the phone, and it worked last night.
Mine worked the night after I shut it off for 12 hours then the following night (last night) it didn't work even though I put it on the charger at the exact same time and the the battery percentage was within 5% of the previous night.. I wish we knew more about the conditions necessary that the machine learning is using to decide whether to enable optimize charging it or not..

Optimized Battery Charging wasn't working for me either. I normally leave my iPhone charging over night, but even with this feature on, the battery continued charging all night.

I contacted Apple Care but no help there (apple support is getting worse by the day, btw. the genius was clueless and his solution was to send a replacement phone).

So I troubleshot it myself by toggling the option on and off and rebooting my phone. It has been working for the last three days. Battery reaches 80% and stops charging for a few hours in the middle of the night and goes back to charging to be 100% charged by the time I wake up.

Optimized Battery Charging does not work well for me, the hours always exceed the time when I wake up. Recently I permanently disabled the option, but after 2 or 3 days the option was automatically activated, is this a bug?

I am using iOS version 14.2 (iPhone 11 Pro max)

I believe it's a bug, (turns back on after resetting phone) happens to me when I restart my 12 PM. I have never used this feature as I shift work.
It seems like this might have been addressed in iOS 14.3.

Do we need to have alarm set up in the morning in order for it to work?

I had to bite the bullet and updated to 14.3 yesterday because I’m getting a series 6 and on my first night of charging with 14.3 installed, optimized charging kicked in with those two “required” location services off just like everyone else. So either it’s a bug or they just changed it’s behavior to get it working for more people. So yeah it didn’t take it long to “learn” my charging routine if it worked on the first time! Weird.

I have the opposite problem. I charge as-needed and have never had this feature work with the possible exception of my MacBook when docked (it drops as low as 93% but then goes back to 100%).

I'd like the option to just set max charge on all my devices to 80% and leave it at that. I really want this setting on my AirPods as they always sit in the case at 100%, and my 1st pair are down to 1.5 hours of music or 25 minutes of phone call before going dead after just under 2 years. My 2 year old iPhone X is down to 94% health (although it's been draining fast lately) by being careful with charging. I have a 5 year old Dell XPS that I've manually limited charge to 75%, and it still has 95% of original capacity.

Come on, Apple. Forget trying to be smart, just give us a (Siri-enabled) switch.

In my experience, it doesn't work unless you stick to a fairly rigid schedule. Even if my sleep schedule fluctuates by an hour, it throws the whole thing off.
Optimized Battery Charging worked well for me on my XR until recently. I always get up at the same time; between 4:00 and 4:30 AM. Previously, the battery was at 100% when I woke up. Now it's always at 80%. I have very regular sleep and charging patterns. The appropriate Location Services items are on. Nothing has really changed except that Optimized Battery Charging no longer works as it should.

I don’t understand why they can’t make it work with the alarms. If you have morning alarms set, the phone should recognize this and optimize the battery charging accordingly. Thats much simpler than trying to learn your behavior and throwing it into chaos when/if you deviate slightly therefrom.
Honestly, just give me manual controls. I’d like to permanently limit charge to 80% for all devices until phone/laptop manufacturers get their act together and stop purposefully overcharging the battery Packs.

I’ve still only seen this feature somewhat work on my MacBook. When docked at my desk, it charges to 100%, then slowly drops to 90% before charging to 100% again. My phone always goes to 100%, and my iPad doesn’t even have the option.
