It transcodes on-the-fly. Orb converts mpeg/avi to an iphone compatible format for streaming. Mpeg and divx/xvid work very well, but OrbLive doesn't seem to even see my mkv files. And for hi-def mpeg2 with ac3, the audio is messed up streaming to my iphone.

I think the main strength of OrbLive is live TV streaming. I've had success with a couple of PCI tv tuner cards, the ATI theater 550pro and theater 650pro cards. Both work very well with OrbLive on my Comcast cable for analog channels.

Well the day this app was released..I was still pondering on whether or not I should get an iPhone 3G. I did some searching and I found out that apps are tied to your account meaning both my touch and iPhone would be able to have the same apps.

Since I wouldn't have to buy Orb twice, I dled it for the touch. It is a great app. Tversity doesn't encode on-the-fly...this does. I was waiting for a long time to play my video files without having to encode. Since Apple sucks, quality has to suffer....but I am hoping another app may arise to allow us to play whatever we want.

Anyway, I upgraded my line to an iPhone 3G yesterday along with my sister who got the quickfire. At&t hates their current customers...apparently. My parents got two free phones.

Just those tiny differences makes the iPhone 3G experience much better than the touch experience. Of course, having 3G almost everywhere helps (the benefits of living on the East Coast btw).

I used this app with 3G and it was extremely fast. It takes as long as a youtube video to start playing. I am very happy with that. However, navigating through the damn thing is a different story. It is kind of like how there is a delay when using aim with 3G.

An issue....when I go to landscape..the framerate starts to suck. I really haven't actually sat down and watched a video so take my review from that standpoint. THe qualilty is great non-landscape and starts to suck as you move to landscape. Non-landscape is small so you have to landscape.
