You'd also probably be good-to-go with older-bought iMacs that are the most recent generation too, you can probably just take it in for yellow screen and they'll give you the newest revision, haha.

Naughty but oh-so-tempting. I wonder how many people will try that on Wednesday if there is an update tomorrow!

I'll try to man up, but I'm a girl!

So, here's a little update:
UPS arrived when I was opening my front door today, so I couldn't really ignore them and pretend not to be in. I phoned Apple and asked if there is a restocking fee for the UK (there isn't) and I am allowed to play with it and see how it all goes. It seems like there is more and more evidence for a refresh, and I asked if the refresh happens on the 10th August (one day outside my 14 days) would I be able to return it. The lady said that it should be possible.

On opening the iMac there were a few notes I made:
The security seal was broken, and the thin wrapping around the screen had it's sticker torn apart, signalling perhaps that the iMac has been opened before. This disappointed me a bit, although I guess I'm doing the same thing. The batteries were already in the mouse and keyboard, and I didn't have to install the software, which was very odd. The build number is CK01600..etc - it was apparently made in Cork, Ireland between 17th and 23rd April 2000. Yes, apparently this iMac was built in the year 2000! I'm guessing the year is wrong, but the fact I just ordered and got an April built iMac is a little weird, no? Makes me think they picked a refurb by accident in the warehouse?

All this aside, I think that the 27" screen is for me, it's nice and big and there's loads of workspace. I have noticed the very very slightest yellowing towards the bottom, but I honestly don't think I would have noticed unless I checked these forums beforehand and heard about the problem. I also checked for dead/stuck pixels using this site: http://imac.squeaked.com/test.php and I think that there is only 1 towards the bottom left of the screen (it is not a specific colour, just kinda shimmery).

Thanks for all the advice guys! :)

Wow. Hearing all this....I CERTAINLY would demand a new computer. Your whole description of the "new" machine sounds very fishy to me. Personally, I wouldn't accept it at all in this condition, even if there appears to be nothing wrong with the machine itself.

agreed, if this was me, I'd return it.

Completely agree. Ask for a refund that way when the update happens you can be sure to get a new one. Politely explain why if you're nice Apple will stand by you. I played nice, sympathetic and "stupid" when i realized the Macbook Pro I got was murder on my arthritic wrist/hand and returned it to the Apple store where I bought it several weeks beyond the return date. I lost $115 on the restock fee but I'm very glad I returned it.

Even for the dead pixel you mention, I'd return that iMac. It irks me you got one that wasn't factory new. Good luck :)

I personally have been meaning to take mine in for gray banding and slight yellowing on the bottom.
I told myself I'd wait until 27" cinema display and iMac update tho.

Ah, well that's not so naughty then! I guess if someone had no screen issues but still wanted the upgrade it would be a bit sneaky, but considering Apple don't seem to have really fixed the issue I can see why they'd consider passing it off as faulty to get an upgrade. I'm sure Apple would take them at their word considering how prevalent the problem has been. Also, one person's "yellowing" is another person's "screen looks amazing!", so I would have thought Apple would just try to please the customer. Might be wrong though!

The severity of my yellowing depends on the amount of spec boost the iMac revision gets. ;)

To be honest I wasn't impressed opening an already opened iMac. The only reason I'm still playing with it is because I have up to 14 days with no restocking fee here in the UK when I return it. I only opened it today, I wanted to run all the tests (superdrive/yellowing/dead pixels) and try it out for size. I thought that Apple don't count 1 pixel being stuck/dead as a defective display, thought it was 6 minimum? I am waiting for the update ideally though, it's just I'm so stuck without a computer and having one for even a fleeting moment feels nice!

It's the build date that really confuses me, because I would have thought all the April models would be long sold out. It makes me think that the Ireland warehouse processed a return and doled it out to me on receiving my order. I also thought all the iMacs were assembled in China, but I have an Irish build code. This makes me wonder whether it's a refurb and has been given a special code. Anyone in the UK/EU know whether an iMac refurb code begins with CK?

Has anybody else had a similar experience with opened packaging or an older than expected build date?

Hmm, wish I could help you out on this one. Bought my computer before moving over here to the land of wooden shoes and windmills.

....if you go looking fro trouble... Its a guarantee you'll find it....:)

the peculiar build date you speak of is normal. They changed the serial number format, so some applications/websites that read the build number misread it as 2000 instead of 2010.

You seem like a reasonable gal, hopefully the update won't include anything you deem "great" or "necessary". Since you don't have a restocking fee, it might be worth it to just return it.

It finally happened!

So.. the update was today! I have about 13 days left to get my refund and replacement. I think it will be worth the effort just to get the latest iMac out, even though there's probably not a major difference in the i5 upgrade. I have called the HE store and the price has gone up by about £13. I can upgrade to i7 for a further £141, taking the total to £1592.13. However, this is a quite over budget and the wait time is longer for the i7 to be built to order. Oh, and then there's the new iLife, does anyone know if all the earlybirds buying the new iMac will be upgraded to the new iLife for free or at a reduced cost. I don't really want to wait for that after waiting for the iMac so long!

Any opinions?
