OS X 10.11.15 installed yesterday, but had major malfunction last night.

Safari opens with about 65 of the last websites in a tab each. Don't know if a glitch in update or a strange keystroke combo, but I've cleared history multiple times and closed Safari, even restarted a few times. Each time I open Safari, I get the same multi-tab result. Any ideas?

2. press and hold the Shift key
3. launch Safari
4. await appearance of a window
5. release the key

… if I recall correctly, that use of the Shift key will suppress reopening of windows.

In Terminal, the following command (from http://apple.stackexchange.com/a/39241/85460 might produce a list:

OK, I can't imagine either of those contributing to the problem. Still, you could try switching off extensions before a quit and then retry steps 1–5 above.

Finder, Go menu, Utilities, Console
– should default to a view of all messages and an option to clear the window.

Quit Safari, clear the window, relaunch Safari then as soon as the problem affects Safari, bring Console to the front to see whether there's any clue.

There might be nothing of use but since the Shift key does not have the required effect, I'm clutching at straws …

Just restarted and counted 65 tabs opening. None of them are recent. I recognze them, but none of them were visited lately.

Just noticed in the search window that many of those old sites are shown in the form of icons. Clearing history does not make them go away.

Time Machine, maybe.

However you regain the lesser version of the OS: be aware that some of your application support data and/or preferences, from the greater version, may be not entirerly compatible with the lesser. .

In that security content article, I don't see anything that might explain the problems that you describe.

You might try one or both of the apps from http://nightly.webkit.org/ to see whether the problems are reproducible.

Postscript

I dusted off a disk that has El Capitan, performed an update and then found the Shift key working as expected with launch of Safari.

The update not only seems to have contrinuted to the above, but none of my keychain login and passwords are working with frequently used website. This update may have a lot of problems. Seems this should have been posted in the OS section. Have requested it be moved to OS section.

Quit Safari....
System Preferences > iCloud
Turn off iCloud sync for Safari.

Go to your User's Library folder.
Scroll down to the Safari folder.
Rename Safari folder to Safarixxx
Open Safari. It should now open without any history, bookmarks etc.
Try adding Safari sync back in System Preferences.

You can revert to the original Safari folder by removing the x's.

Thanks, but Safari was not checked. Does that indicate something else?

Also, If I have to log into gmail one more time......I used to be able to just open gmail and the login info was automatic, now it is not.

Check to see if the setting below hasn't inadvertently changed to -- "tabs for favorites" or a "tabs folder".

Safari -> Preferences -> General -> New windows open with (choice in dropdown menu)

Those selections aren't available to me. Try changing the selections to Favorites or Homepage, for example.

Quit Safari
Go into your user /Library.
Then to the Caches folder, and drag the folder "com.apple.Safari" to the trash. Empty the trash.
Launch Safari.
That will likely fix your issue. (correct me if that doesn't help at all )
