OS X Yosemite Public Beta Invites

Now I know it's not officially summer just yet and that the invites are meant to be delivered in the summer, however I have read and heard from some people who claim to have received their invites.

For instance, on Saturday a caller on Leo Laporte's 'The Tech Guy' claimed he has the public beta -

Now this puzzled me. It puzzled me because:

A. It's not officially summer yet.

B. I've seen very few people or articles online mentioning people getting invites.

C. I signed up just moments after the keynote and I would imagine I'm in the first million.

So I just wanted to make this thread to see if any number of people have received an invite to the public beta yet.

Let them claim what they want. We are now seeing 10.10 update 1. Their isn't a public beta yet. Many things needs to be fixed before getting this status.

Developers and testers are submitting bugs to Apple. Let them address them first and probably 3/4 updates later from now on we will see a invited-public release.

Don't let them fool you!

The public beta is most likely going to be DP3 or DP4 but given a more friendly name, just like how DP2 is called "OS X 10.10 Update 1.0" if you upgrade via the App Store.

I received my public beta invite I think.... unless all iOS developers received a redemption code for yosemite... i don't have an OS X developer account.

Yeah, I am calling BS on that caller. Apple would not be that stupid to send out a public beta this early. Yosemite is still a buggy OS (and it should be).

My bet, the public will not get the invites to the beta until August, but probably more closer to September.

That's still the developer preview.

It is known that iOS developers have also now been granted access to the OS X dev previews too, probably to expand the number of testers even further. Perhaps that's what the TWiT caller got mixed up with too.

I think it's certainly the case that everyone else is saying, in that the public preview will be a much more well rounded and stable release, just so they can fine tune it down to removing the bugs usually found once the final version has been released to the public.

I sort of believed that would be the case anyway, but these claims of people getting invites just puzzled me.

All iOS developers received a redemption code for Yosemite. When it's in public beta I reckon it'll be called "beta 1" etc rather than "developer preview 1" etc.

Judging by today's update, there is SO much fixed i would go as far to say it's just about stable now. I had an issue with setup assistant showing up after this update even though it was an update, not a clean install. Weird. Bootups can be broken too at times.

The guy probably either confused the Developer release with a public beta or downloaded it from some third-party site/service.

That explains a lot, thanks for the clarification. I wasn't keen on installing iOS8b1 right off the bat, I know better. So I waited, and didn't see the Yosemite DP until today when I tried out iOS8.

As impatient as I usually am, I think I'm gonna wait a little while on Yosemite though. At least until people on here start saying that the DP's are a little more stable.

Outside of Apple Seed members I am willing to bet that most people are confusing new access to Yosemite DP’s as iOS developers as getting access to the public beta because they think of June as Summer.

My guess is that the Public Beta is going to be labeled very clearly and available in a very clear matter so that people know what they are getting to avoid the obvious criticism that beta software is buggy,. Won’t be 100% decline in silly criticism but it should help.

June IS summer, lol. As of yesterday anyway.


And you're right, Apple will make it very clear. When people signed up for the beta, I was one of them (before I knew iOS devs received access beforehand), the last screen you see after signing up said they will send you an email when it's available (I still have the screenshot of it). I never received an email from Apple saying the Beta was available, so that portion of the program hasn't begun yet. At least that's how I see it.

Doubt it. The 10.9.4 beta showed up in the app updates yesterday. The blurb does mention it is a beta, but only a casual mention.

Not to sound rude, but the tone of the caller's voice and the language he used sounded very non-technical, and this raises some doubts. "This is my first time doing this on the Mac… I have it on my computer… and I'm getting the Mavericks 'periodic updates.'" Sounds like my 80-year-old grandpa trying to explain a technical issue to me over the phone.

Trust me, Apple has referred to the upcoming public test as a "beta" and developer preview 2 only just came out. It isn't anywhere near beta. I'd say late July or August.

I was talking about the public beta, not the normal paid developer paid previews. Apple operates the DP program under the understood principal that these are not intended for normal usage etc. Most developers know this, but many people do not.

I am hypothesizing that if when Apple does make this public, they will do a better job at identifying things like this.

It's not Summer at the end of June? News to me! Ever since I've known it, certainly here in the UK, June is Summer.

Spring is March/April/May, Summer is June/July/August, Autumn is September/October/November, Winter is December/January/February.
