Windows 7 network browsing delays with MAC file SMB server

regarding the SMB update - yes, i would love to update to 3.5.2 - but i don't know how. not that good with manual installations on UNIX systems.

Also i called applecare about the SMB, they say they don't really provide support for that since it's a freeware product ?! I asked about updating it, and i was told that i would no be able to use the server admin to control SMB anymore ???

back to the issues:

it seems with static IP's it's somewhat improved. but still weird behavior:

the Windows computers have 3 mapped drives from the server to access WORD 2007 files. In most cases the browsing is fast and swift as well as searching in them. Then on occasions. estimated 2 of 10 times the spinning wheel will appear and the windows file explorer would hang for about 10-20 sec or so. then the file will open fine.

what might be causing the delay ? what can i can check ? all PC's have fixed IP addresses. Are there services on W7 that i should check for, disable ? it seems in the morning it's better, then around noon it starts to happen more often. what's causing such delay ?

One more thing you can check is the adapter config (NIC) and make sure they all work in the same mode [ 100Mb/Full Duplex or 1000Mb/Full ]
What kind of switch is connecting them all together? [managed/auto]

Sometimes (Win7) will try to auto-negotiate the speed and that can cause a slight delay.

Also if the area of the disk that one of the users wants to access is used by another user - that too can cause a delay.

(it's a shame that I can't just pop in and have a look :) )

i've disabled few services including DHCP on the router and all the clients PC's the speed negotiation is on auto i believe. only the server and one PC uses ethernet - the rest wify-n

can you comment on the SMB updates ? Do i need both WMB and DMB enabled on the SMB server ? No domain login is used.

Been away for a while, just got to read the updates...

If you do not use the domain part just leave the DMB unchecked.
You can update SMB and the process is pretty straightforward, but unfortunately you'll loose the Apple support if you do...

In theory it shouldn't really make a difference as the supplied version should work with the PCs just fine.

What more can I say... :apple:

i was getting worried you closed the door to my never ending questions :)
things seems to be working pretty good. i'll disable the DMB and see what SMB logs say.

Nah - "never-ending-questions" is what's leading to the solutions... :D

Let us know how the system/network is doing after the changes...

well with the MDB in the SMB service name log:

is that a problem ?

PS: one of the issues was Detail pane when enabled in W7, it seems it was randomly locking the file on itself. disabling that solved that permissions issues.

Well, that depends...
Looks like the network you are managing is quite well established/stable in a way that you do not add/remove a lot of machines on to the network (correct me if I'm wrong there).
The solution that I would personally use is to get rid of DHCP completely and replace it with HOSTS/Static IPs (remember, we talked about it a while ago) BUT for this to work you have to edit HOSTS on ALL computers on the network and every PC/Mac has to have a static IP.

The location of the HOSTS file is:

Win XP/V/7 - C:\%WINDIR%\System32\Drivers\etc
*NIX - /etc/hosts
That way you'd bypass all [well, most ] automatic requests to the resources that might/might not be available at the time and generate errors...

There is a little bit more to it, but this is definitely what I would do first on ALL computers... :apple:

...it could also be one of the weird samba problems that take eons to diagnose with no known solutions...well, just saying... :apple:

static IP

i did disable DHCP everywhere. all computers have static IP and disabled DHCP service. including DHCP on the router.

can you enlighten me on the importance of host files in this case ?
(what's the difference, it's static as it is now, isn't it ? all computers sees each other fine, network browsing seems to be working)

seems what you're saying is that if i do that i will not need WINS server ? each PC will know the other from LMHOST and keeps mouth shut crying for WINS server list ? but i don't see any error logs related to WINS ???

on the server i did edit the /etc/hosts and entered IP of all PC's

SMB might think there is supposed to be a MDB on the network and is trying to sync with it ? maybe i just need to tell it somehow there is none, don't look for it ?
