My relatively minor pet peeve with OS X (which i've been using for about a year now) is that the @," and € are in the wrong places in Apple's UK keyboard layout.

I use a real UK keyboard at work so my fingers have never quite gotten used to Apple's implementation :)

Why sell a laptop advitised as having a UK keyboard when it clearly has a US keyboard with £ replacing # (which btw should be under ~ not alt-3, but that isn't a character i use that often so it doesn't bother me)

One question, though, since this is the thread on OS X annoyances - how can I stop icons from dynamically appearing on my desktop each time I insert a CD or mount a network directory? I'd like desktop icons just turned off, if possible, but I can't figure out how.

Easy, just go to the Finder, click the Finder menu, go to preferences, first thing you should see is the option to choose which drives (if any) appear on your desktop. Just turn them all off.

If it's not the first thing you see, just look around in the finder prefs.
And one last thing, Finder's prefs are seperate from the System Prefs, and View Options.

i'm not sure if anyone recommended this to you but...
System/Library/CoreServices/MenuExtras/
there is an eject thingy in there that you can have in the menu bar as well as a bunch of other menus

BTW, regarding the cd-rom -- Actually the comment about holding down F12 to eject is correct, I had no idea. They should include that in the manual :)

I'm really loving the G5. Basically the first night was bumpy, but after fixing the mouse and spending some time customizing everything, like I do with every OS, I'm really happy with this machine. There are some things that will always bug the crap out of me, but that's what Apple's feedback form is going to be used for... I'd still be interested in setting up a public site though.

And I certainly didn't get rid of my PC, it's still under my desk when I need it. But man is it nice to have a real unix box again that is usable on the shell *and* comfortable on the desktop. Three cheers for Apple for including screen, zsh, and vim 6.2 from the factory in Panther. :D They don't publicize it, but Panther's Unix toolset has definitely improved over previous versions I've used. Now if they'd just update their X11 Server...
