Osx dvd will not boot.

I have 3 different mac osx disks, a x86 one , and 2 10.4 ones. when i boot from the disk all i get is a black screen with a flashing underscore. WTF? any suggestions?
 
What kind of Mac do you have exactly and where did those disks come from? Are they retail versions of OSX?
 
What computer are you using. Are these disks the reinstall disks that came with the computer?

Macbook pro, 2.16 core 2 duo 1gb

No unfortunally i bought the notebook second hand and i do not have the og disks. Gan i get one from the apple store?
 
hmm. You might have to talk to the store people. If the disks that you have are specific to other computers, it will not boot on your mac. Or you might have to ebay for someone elses mbp install disk.

And I am not sure if there is an x86 version of tiger.
 
Called the mac store and they said the same tiger disk that works with the g4 should work with the macbook pro. Have any of you ever had this happen?
 
You realize that the only x86 version of OS X is a downloaded bootleg copy which is illegal You're going to need a specific retail copy for this to work.

Impossible.
There is no x86 retail version afaik, they're PPC. The only way to reinstall would be from the original disks that came with the machine.

Exactly. There isn't an x86 version. The only way you can have an x86 version is an illegal copy (correct me if I'm wrong but i'm 99% sure on this). There's a univeral version of OS X.4 (PPC and Intel) and that's it. Contact Apple or buy an offical version of OS X and it should work.

There's a bit of conflicting information here. You need the specific install DVDs that came with that model of computer. Retail DVDs won't work at all.

Is there anyway you could contact the buyer? That would probably be your best bet as I don't know how much help Apple would be without the receipts from the original laptop buyer.
 
Almost there....... (installing OS X after reformatting hard drive)

Ok i reformatted my MBP hard drive. It is now ready for osx but, ... when i go to install the dvd it still does not boot. All i get is a flashing folder with a question mark. I went to the mac store and they only have one version of osx for sale and they swear up and down it is for all the macs even the MB Pros. Help me boot osx....................................................
 
if I recall correctly, hold the option key while booting and it will give you the option to boot off of a cd. All versions of mac osx come on the same disks so the store is right.
 
Intel Macs can't boot from the retail version of OSX as far as I'm aware, because it's not yet a Universal Binary. Do you have the restore discs handy perchance? :)

Has no one had a problem installing a retail version of osx to a MBP. I cant stand this every disk ( linux , windows , even the mac repair disks will boot but the osx.
 
Retail versions of Tiger are PPC only and will not install on an Intel-machine. You need the install disks for that specific model... the ones that came new in the box.
 
The retail versions are PPC only, so they don't work on Intel-based Macs like the MBP. Every Intel-based Mac shipped with Tiger, so there's no need for an Intel retail disc. Contact Apple if you need replacement discs.
 
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO here is the magical question , i just spent 130 bucks on osx, where can i get a copy of osx for the mbp? I DO NOT HAVE THE ORIGINALS

130 bucks? You have to contact Apple to get ones for your machine or find the specific model of your machine and have a look on eBay or somewhere similar.
