No... they would have to support all types of hardware and then we'd get something called Windows 2.0. It's hard to maintain a quality user experience on varying types of hardware.

Linux does it.

Linux runs not only on all Intel based PCs but on SPARC, ARM, Alpha, VAX, MIPS and many of others including Google's Andriod cell phones. It runs well on many more platforms than MS Windows. It does this with better stability than Windows or Mac OSX.

If you don't like Linux then look at BSD UNIX. BSD provides the foundation for Mac OSX and BSD runs well right out of the box on all Intel PCs as well as dozens for non PC platforms, almost as many of them as Linux.

The argument of having not running well because of the need to support a wide range of hardware platforms is disproved by several counter examples.

Ok, exaggerating a little, but you get the point.
Exaggerating a lot is more like it. And the point was what again? That hyperboles provide proof of a situation? Many of us know that you can find similar hardware specs that show a PC is priced less. But there are other examples that show a Mac is priced less, more easily found around the Mac Pro. In the end it is impossible to compare prices of a Mac and a PC with the exact same hardware because there are always going to be differences. You can't do "exact same". So, one must then choose to ignore certain differences in order to find some basis for comparison. The problem is what you choose to ignore is very personal and so each person has a different take on "similar" hardware. Plus, I think it's a good idea to avoid getting mired down "in the numbers". There are also qualitative factors to consider and they are always much more difficult to compare.

Linux is open source which means there are millions of people working on various bits of it and improving parts of it to get it to work on all types of hardware. I bet if Linux was closed source it would be in the same boat as Windows.
