As the title says, beware of buying an OtterBox Defender Pro for the iPhone 17 Pro Max. I think I can confirm they made the case using dimensions and not a real iPhone.

As soon as I received my Pro Max today, I put it in the case and noticed something was off. It feels a little bigger than the phone. On the right side, near the Camera Control button, it doesn’t make a proper click and feels loose. If I press slightly above it, the Camera Control activates even though I didn’t press the button. I can even see the orange color showing at the top corner of my phone near the Dynamic Island. Something is definitely wrong.

I wasn’t sure if it was just mine, so I went to Best Buy and bought two more. Guess what? They all had the same problem.

I emailed them about it. Let’s see what happens.

More and more people are confirming the problem. Hopefully OtterBox fixes this soon. It’s incredible that the entire first batch has this design flaw.

I was able to fix this issue! If you look closely at the camera control button on the case, it is made up of multiple plastic and silicone/rubberized components that are nested into each other. These components are supposed to be able to move/slide independently, but out of the box they are fused together and cause the multiple pieces to act as a single unit. This causes the oversensitivity we are experiencing.

If you disassemble the button, this loosens the pieces and allows them to slide independently, fixing the issue.

With the camera control button now working as it should, this case has been awesome for me. Let me know if this fix works for you.

That actually seems to work. I’ll test more today and report back but thanks for trying to find a solution!

disassemble the button

Hero. At a minimum, so much better.

I believe pushing the smallest inner piece of the button with a fingernail from the inside is what dislodged it.

I swear I would have toyed with it myself, but I knew Team Otter was hard at work on something so was just waiting for a reply to my email. Thanks for beating them to the punch this weekend. (Feel so bad for them! They’re always great on the phone/email. The supplier/QA are in deep doo doo for sure.)

Awesome! Glad to hear that this seems to be working for others. Here are some detailed pictures for reference.

1. OtterBox Defender Camera Control button for iPhone 17 Pro Max:

2. Push out and then reinstall the small inner insert. This is probably the main cause of the oversensitivity issues:
UPDATE 24-Sept-2025: Step 2 may not be a great long-term solution, as you run the risk of the insert falling out over time. See post #9 below for more information, and to help troubleshoot, if you can!

3. You can also push out and reinstall the outer hard plastic insert to loosen up the entire button mechanism. This piece takes a bit more force to remove, so use steady pressure to massage it out:
UPDATE 25-Sept-2025: This step is not necessary. See post #10 below by @AppleCook that includes a video showing how to dislodge (but not fully remove) the small inner insert. That method seems to be the best workaround at the moment.

Good luck!

Hey mate, sorry how did you manage to push out the first small insert? I can’t seem to get it
Might just be scared to push hard enough though lol

UPDATE!
I am going to suspend the recommendation of removing the small inner insert.
The inner insert seems to be mostly a friction fit holding it into place. Removing the inner insert loosens it up enough that you then run the risk of the insert falling out over time (happened to me today, about three days after I initially removed it). I am probably going to try using a small dab of rubber cement to see if this keeps it in place.

If I could, I would recommend to Otterbox that they redesign the small inner insert with a very slight lip on the inner side to keep it from backing out, as I suspect this would have happened over time anyway. Right now, there is nothing structural holding that piece in place.

Troubleshooting: Can someone who has a case with the oversensitivity problem (but has not yet fully disassembled their button) try removing only the outer hard plastic insert (step 3 above), but leave the smaller inner rubberized insert in place? I would be curious to see if doing that fixes the oversensitivity problem. Thanks!

I was pleased I didn't even have to remove the whole outer hard plastic insert.

I only pushed the innermost insert towards the outside until it dislodged slightly, and it’s been almost perfect since. Gotta say I was worried seeing yours entirely disassembled! Curious to hear more from the Otters themselves about this.

Is this for all models or just the PM? Also - $80 - yikes!
Testing with iPhone 17 Pro (not Max).

$69.91 shipped after coupon code—yikes. If someone could just drop an iPhone 1000 times in a couple dozen different highly protective cases and prove one is equal to the Defender, I’d love to save the money. Barring that, nobody is testing cases to that extent that I’ve seen, so my own decade+ of Defender drops gives me more confidence than I have with any other manufacturer.

I suppose we’re funding some salaries for good folks (designers/support) in Colorado so that’s nice. And some wages for the folks abroad in the factory.

@AppleCook Thanks for posting the video! When I was initially troubleshooting, I had my camera control button assembled/reassembled probably 3-4 times, and then one more time when I was taking pictures to post here. So I am sure I degraded the button's adhesive enough to cause it fall out more easily. I think the method you show in your video is probably the best way to remedy the issue for now.

But I would still be cautious about long-term durability, and I worry there is still risk of that insert falling out over time. Looking at the small inner insert, I suspect OtterBox is using some kind of adhesive on the flat, harder plastic base (see picture). The flexible ridged portion of the button has no attachment points. I think that over time, this adhesive would degrade and the button would fall out.

VlYJKq4.jpeg

I have reattached the small inner insert using adhesive at the hard plastic base and have been able to recreate the oversensitive camera control button click. So this tells me that the main culprit for the oversensitive button clicks is truly that small inner insert and not the harder outer plastic piece.

The camera control button actually seems to work best when it is "floating" within the harder outer plastic piece, rather than attached/fixed on the one side. So if I could re-engineer this piece, it would have no adhesive, but be held in place by a small ridge at the end of the rubberized part to physically retain it in place. This would allow the insert to "float" and would prevent the oversensitivity. I am too invested in this issue now LOL!

Hey, so I took all of it apart after seeing that the silicon/rubber area was ever so slightly too long and protruding from the back and pushing up against the button constantly. This is what was causing oversensitivity out-of-box, and poor fits when one would reinsert it after reinstalling the case. It wasn't going back in all the way. I trimmed off a hairs width from the silicon, the full length across and reinstalled it. The button is no longer over sensitive and the camera control (swiping) works perfectly.

It's still a design flaw that needs to be fixed. Even the camera area (I have the iPhone 17 Pro) is far too large. Water and dirt will easily get into the gap between the camera bump and the defender case. My entire phone shifts around in the case ever so slightly as well. Otterbox has never let me down, heck, their commuter case survived a motorcycle accident and left my previous phone unharmed. I can say though, I am not impressed with this release of defender cases at all, definitely not for the cost.

I will try the suggested fix on my iPhone 17 Pro Max Otterbox Defender Pro case when I get my iPhone 17 Pro Max 512GB in Silver on AT&T. Can't you also adjust the Camera settings to require a double press to activate the camera?

Has anybody contacted OtterBox about the issue? Just curious as to their response. I did the original fix and haven’t had any issues with the small piece falling out yet.
@sdfd504 I sent a message to OtterBox this past weekend, and just received a generic response today requesting that I call their customer support. I will try to follow-up tomorrow. Not sure if anyone else has gotten a reply from OtterBox with more info or a resolution?

@Anonymous456 I was trying to find a non-destructive solution, but ultimately you are correct. In its current implementation, the ridged silicone/rubber insert is too long, so it makes sense that trimming it would also work. Glad to hear that method works and keeps the swiping function intact! I definitely agree that this is a pretty big flaw that needs to be redesign.

@jcp007 If the OtterBox case you receive has this oversensitive issue, you will find that adjusting the camera control setting will not be adequate (unless you turn off the camera control altogether). The sensitivity is so extreme, it will be activating the camera even when you set it to the firmest setting or for double-tap.

I spoke with OtterBox customer service. They are aware of the problem and will warranty the phone case without any issues. They are actively working on redesigning the button, but do not have an ETA of when that will be completed. Once they have a redesigned case, they will send that out as a replacement.

In the meantime, their official recommendation is to change the setting for the camera control button to the "Double Click" option to open the camera app.

I have a non max Iphone 17 Pro that I recieved on launch day last Friday. My otterbox defender pro arrived earlier so I was able to try it day 1.

Same results as most with oversensitivity and so much so that even touching the rubber above the button would cause the click. I turned off the camera control button completely with screen on and off.

I found this post and pushed out the inner button only and it helped a lot!!! After a second day it seemed to loosen up a bit more and has worked really well. Mine doesn't seem like it will fall out as of right now but time will tell.

Using customer support with Otterbox they simply had a generic reply that I could open a Warranty claim. I'm not sure if I want to do that yet. I see similar complaints with the commuter series.

Long time otterbox user with multiple purchases from Iphone4/7/11/14pro a few ipads and my kids phones as well. First time ever having an issue other than stretched out skins.

Yes -

Same & same (want max protection without interruption, want a working Defender). Going to leave them alone for a while since it must be hard for support right now.

I trimmed off a hairs width
Smart! Thanks.

We’re getting paid the same rate for this right? ;)
Yes, 💯—now that you inspired a fix that has me 95% of the way to perfect, I’ve been able to put it mostly out of mind.

Great news, thanks. I wonder if only squeaky wheels are going to get that grease. It should save them a buck (many a buck!) not to be proactive, but they run a reputational risk.

I imagine they will take extreme caution to prevent anything like this happening again while the memory is fresh for the next decade. Imagining a solid number of variables that could’ve caught them here. Wonder how they root caused it specifically.

Thanks, all, this is a great community.

I was trying to purchase a Defender Pro case at the Verizon. When they scanned the SKU it showed up as not in stock. The manager went and checked on their internal slack channel and showed me that all Otterbox cases for the 17 Pro and Pro Max and regular 17 are being pulled from stores because they are deemed to be defective.

At least I won’t be doing anything with the case for now xD. I just deactivated the camera control button in the meantime haha.

So what OtterBox is doing is opening warranty claims to keep them in a queue, and as soon as they come up with a fix and release a new case, they’ll start sending it out to everyone who already has an open claim. They’re also giving a new charger for free.
