I like the new MBAs; but, their pricing is very deceptive, imo.

Let's take a look at a real-world performing 11.6" version and the ACTUAL price:
-64MB will never cut it for full-blown OSX, so 128GB = $1199 starting point.

Then your likely to add:
-1.6GHz Processor +100 (much faster than base)
-4GB memory +100 (must for latest apps)
-iWork +49
-3yr AppleCare Protection Plan +249 (!!)
-Mini DisplayPort to DVI +29
-MagSafe Airline Adaptor +49

Total: $1775 + Tax!! For the smaller MBA. (And many of you may need more additions).

If only the iPad ran Flash.

I really like the new MBA features, minus the lack of backlit keyboard or simple overhead keyboard light (like the Lenovo T410).

However, the price seems extreme for what you get and not the "substantial" reduction in price over the previous version that we where lead to believe.

Maybe it might be better to wait for the next generation iPad or MacBooks with Sandy Bridge processors.

I had no idea that "typical" meant "with the customizations I personally want". Thanks for educating me.

Also, I buy my adapters for less than $10 at monoprice.com

iLife comes free.

No need for AppleCare.

Can do without the extras.

If you want streamlined, the new Air is good. If not, get a MacBook.

Problem solved and no further need for your bad math.

Yeah, and you could take an economy car and nearly double the price by adding every singe option that the dealer throws in front of you. It doesn't mean you need to be dense enough to do it.

eBay for Apple Care, 50-100 bucks. There, you just saved 150-200 dollars.

Considering you would have likely also upgraded the previous generation with the same additions, then the price is less.

I couldn't agree more ...

OP the word is "you're" as in you're likely to add ...

Typical price of the 13" I'd buy is $1800 before tax. Considering I paid that for the low-range Air 2 years ago, I'm fairly impressed.

  • 64GB - More than enough to run OS X. What are you talking about?
  • What's wrong with 1.4 GHz?
  • iWork - Definitely I won't add it, a lot of Mac users might own it already. It's software, not hardware. Just use OpenOffice.
  • 3 year AppleCare - Not necessary, but I'll give you that many people will get it.
  • Mini DP to DVI - Not necessary
  • Airline Adapter - Definitely not getting this.

Price should come as no surprise to anyone that's been around Apple for awhile.

I ordered a loaded 13", because for me it's worth it. I'm in an airplane a lot and this will be a good replacement for my original MBA. When I need more resources (which I do) I have my 15" mid 2010 i7 MBP. The air is a good companion / travel machine.

This is an odd view.

Many people buying this will already have a Mac, so they won't need iWork, additional cables, etc. and maybe not even the upgraded processor.

You are just absolutely crazy if you don't get AppleCare. You're telling me your are fine paying for a new logic board if it fails sometime in three years?

1. No point in buying apple care at purchase. You get it FREE for an entire year, and if at the end of that year you want to add two extra years you can pay for it then.

2. You get 50 dollars off of apple care AND the price of the machine with student discount, which anybody can get, even if you arent a student.

3. A lot of people already have those extras or just dont need them (me).

Nothing in your post is relevant. Sorry man : /

Wait - paying 25% of the purchase price for 2 more years of coverage on the chance that something super expensive will fail? If I don't do this, then I am 'absolutely crazy'? Come on.

Edit: Am I missing your sarcasm? I sure hope so.

Exactly. The target audience for the MBA already has another computer and will use the Air as a second, extremely mobile computer. 64 GB is plenty for the OS, apps, and necessary files. No, you won't be able to put your entire collection of movies on it, but thats not what it's meant for. The PC i had before i got my MacBook only had a 60 GB hard drive and i never had any problem with it. And if you do want to carry every file with you, you could easily get an external drive.

Only an idiot would shop like the way you just added.
iLife 2011 is included, so it is already 50 dollars miscalculated. Also, I am sure you are a troll.

Most of us are employeed. If you are not employeed, then you are most likely a student. In other words, you can get discounts on MBA and other apple products.

Do you have any idea how much an original SSD MacBook Air went for when launched? Yeah, in upwards of 2 grand. Hell maybe even 3. I can't remember.

Yep. My current White Mid 2007 MacBook has a 80GB hard drive (I haven't used all of it yet), and it runs OS X Leopard just fine. The OS needs about 1GB to install I think.

He forgot to include a full version of Photoshop CS5... that should bring the 11" MBA out-the-door price to just over $2,500.

SO SHOCKING!!!

And why do you buy Applecare on day one? You have 12 months before you need to waste that money.
