At this time, I rip with Mediafork/Handbrake.

Codec = AVC/H.264 Video/ AAC Audio
Framerate = same as source
Average bitrate (kbps) = 2250
2-Pass Encoding

Audio bitrate (kbps) = 192

Picture Setting: Keep Aspect Ratio and De-interlace on.

I would encode the movie in half (two files - Part A and Part B) and do a batch encoding job by using the queue.

The process takes a LONG time on my iMac G5 (2.1 GHz w/ 2.5 GB RAM) but the end result is very much like the source...I can't tell the difference between the actual DVD and my rips.

But if you want to go the longer route, you can follow this...

Thanks for the tips, fellas!
You should do dvd's at 1500~3000 KB ... I usually do them at 2500 but it varies (as animation can go lower w/o losing quality).

Make sure de-interlace is checked as well as 2-pass.
I have checked enabled both deinterlacing and 2-pass encoding. Under "Quality" there are 3 options: Target size I'm *assuming* that I should manually enter the bitrate (2500) as opposed to using the slider bar?

Target size is physical size (in megabytes and it will caculate the bitrate for you) and bitrate is your target bitrate (and it will calculate the size for you). You enter one or the other but not both.

Please see the handbrake forums for more support^^

iTunes>File>Import then navigate to where your movie is on your HD.

I imported two iMovie clips into ITunes, however they won't sync with ATV. I am getting an error message that says that the file types are not compatibile with the ATV?? I imported video from my MiviDV camcorder into IMovie then "shared" it as a Quicktime movie (the resulting file extension is .dv). iTunes will let me import and play it on my computer, but ATV will not.

Does anyone know if I have to save teh iMovie clip as a different file type in order for ATV to play it? So much for my mac being easy...

You need to convert your movie to a Quicktime movie (*.mov) or H.264 (*.mp4). Also keep in mind that the AppleTV only supports HD videos that are 1280 x 720 at 24fps and 960 x 540 at 30fps.

And when you rip DVD's you should keep the framerate same as source.

Open it in quicktime and "Export it" to Apple TV ( then wait for a few hours/days ) ;-)
