I have had a problem with every single drive enclosure I have ever bought from OWC. For some dumb reason their chipsets are not mac compatible. Go figure. The products I have bought have been Newer Technology products though so maybe they just suck but OWC needs some of that hate because they keep selling them.

I have never had a problem with various OWC enclosures until USB 3.0 became available on Macs. And OWC enclosures and OS X aren't the only enclosures/operating system having problems with USB 3.0. If you do a quick Startpage search you will turn up lots of hits about USB 3.0 problems with Windows computers...

Although day late and a dollar short, I have also had nothing but grief with the Newerstack Ministack Max, which uses the JMicron USB 3.0 chipset.

I am really starting to think Thunderbolt may be the better option...

Thunderbolt is too expensive for me... I am using OWC Mercury Elite Pro enclosures and Firewire 800 because of an incompatibility with certain Samsung drives that prevent them from spinning-down when the computer is asleep or powered-off when connected via USB 3.0.

I could manually turn-off the external drives but that is a pain. FW800 is OK for my uses...

Get a USB3 enclosure or dock with the right chipset, and things will work much better.

I use this one (no financial interest):

No sleep problems whatsover. In fact, it's my "external boot drive" -- sits on my desktop with an Intel 520 series SSD in it. Works great.

OWC Update...

A few days ago I received the following message from my OWC tech contact:

"When we tested the enclosure that you returned, we actually experienced the same issue using our own test drive. We have the issue assigned to our product development team to look into, but at this time there are quite a few projects ahead of it, so it may be over a week before we have a resolution."

The replacement enclosure that I received around a week ago has the same problem so it will be interesting to hear what OWC comes up with during their investigation of the problem.

It's been 2.5 years since your post. :)
What did OWC say?
Was it a firmware issue. Is it now fixed on models sold in late 2015?

I've been dealing with OWC support regarding the sleep problem when my two OWC Mercury Elite Pro external drive enclosures are connected to my iMac11,1 (running El Capitan) via FW800. No problems with Sleep when using USB, but since FW800 is faster on my 2009 iMac, I prefer to use it. Here is what OWC told me today:

"This is a known issue with both the Oxford 944 and JMicron 355 chipset in 10.9 or later. Unfortunately, we have not received a fix for the issue from Oxford or JMicron. We've also submitted a bug report to Apple and have not heard back from them either."

I of course filed my own bug report with Apple, but since the problem apparently started in 10.9 and here we are using 10.11.2, it looks like Apple has once again turned their back on us, only because we choose to use their legacy tech. How sad. (Regardless, please file a bug report with Apple too. Even if it doesn't do any good, at least you can beat them over the head with it. This problem did not exist prior to 10.9, so why not. It cannot be the chipset's fault. It's clearly Apple's.)

Hey guys I want to ask, Oxford 944 and Jmicorn 355 which is better? I see JMB355 is often used in the 3.5in drives enclosure, Ned Oxford 944 is often used in a 2.5in enclosures , why? There are also 2.5in enclosures with. Jmicorn 355, which one should I buy for a in house network shared disk drive ? I need one for my small studio .

I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you. And if you see my last two posts in this thread, you will see the sheer APATHY that resulted. Not a single person replied back to me. But even though I don't have an answer for you, I wanted to at least give you the courtesy of a reply -- which is more than I received in this thread.
